Abstract

235,565. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Massey, W. F.). June 12, 1924, [Convention date]. Covers; joints; cooling.-The joint between a furnace cover and casing is made by fusible material, an electric heating-element being associated with the joint so that the material can be melted when it is desired to remove the cover. The electrically-heated furnace shown, which is more particularly adapted for heating a charge in vacuo, or in the presence of a selected gas, comprises a casing 10 surrounded at its upper edge by a selling-trough 20 for a flanged cover 11. Within the trough is a heating element 23, which may be a resistance conductor of the kind described in Specification 144,767, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.]. The furnace is immersed in a cooling-tank 27, and when it is desired to remove the cover the water is run off to below the level of the sealing trough before the current is passed through the heating- element 23 to melt the solder or other fusible material 22. Specification 146,127 is referred to.
