Abstract

223,271. Marks, E. C. R., (Cobb Electro Reduction Corporation of Canada, Ltd.). June 11, 1923. Arsenic, antimony, cobalt, molybdenum, tin, vanadium, zinc, and other metallic oxides.-Volatilizable oxides are obtained from ores by feeding the finely divided material into an oxidizing zone above a bath, which may be maintained in fusion by means of electrodes immersed in the bath. The invention is described with reference to the treatment of molybdenite. An electric furnace 1 has electrodes 6, 7, 11, tap holes 4, 5, an air inlet 12 with a cock 13, a charging shaft 14, and fume outlet 15 leading to a bag house or condenser 16. To start the operation, a flux such as fluorspar coke and old silica slag is spread upon the bottom of the apparatus so as to cover the electrode 6 and the electrode 7 is lowered to fuse the flux. Finely divided slag is then added and the electrode 7 is gradually raised and is removed altogether when the bath reaches the level 5. The bath is maintained molten by current between the electrodes 6 and 11 and finely divided molybdenite is fed in through the shaft 14 into the airspace above the bath. Alternatively, the electrode 7 may be omitted, the fused bath being built up by means of external heating until the electrodes 11 are submerged, or the material may be fused in a separate apparatus. Additional electrodes 17 may be employed, Fig. 3, being arranged at a greater distance from the electrode than they are from each other so that they will remain in the circuit 18 and not be influenced by the current in the circuit 19. In another modification, Fig. 4, electrodes 20, 21, 22 correspond with the electrodes 6, 7, 11, Fig. 1. A doublethrow switch 23 is arranged so that one side closes contacts 24<a>, 24<b> with the 2-phase mains 23a in a circuit 24 which includes the electrodes 20, 21 and the other side closes contacts 25<a>, 25<b>, 25<c> with the 3-phase mains 23b in a circuit 25 which includes the electrodes 20, 22.
