Type-lever machines.-Type-levers of equal length are equally distributed in the type-lever segment and are arranged in three groups, namely a middle group and a sub-group at each side, the type-levers of the middle group being normal to the segment and those of each sub-group being arranged to fan outwardly at their free ends, thereby enabling the segment to accommodate a larger number of type-levers than is usual. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the type-levers 14 of the central group are guided in equally spaced radial slots 26 cut normally to the segment 17, whereas the type-levers 15 of the two outer groups are guided in radial slots 27 which are skewed or converge rearwardly, causing a corresponding convergence of the levers guided therein. The head portions 28 of all of the outer type-levers 15 are bent at an obtuse angle to provide clearance, and the heads of most of the central group of type-levers are similarly bent. In addition, the head portions 28 of the outer type-levers are twisted relatively to their body portions 29, as shown in Fig. 6, to compensate for the skewing of their guiding slots, thereby ensuring that their types 19 are brought parallel to the plane of writing when actuated. In order that the oblique movement of the outer groups of typelevers shall not cause them to bind upon their fulcrum wire at the back of the segment, the upper ends of the bearing slots which receive the fulcrum wire are bevelled, and the pivotal connections between the ends of the type-levers and the key-actuated bell-cranks are made long enough to allow lateral play of the type-levers.
