My invention relates to typewriting machines and more especially to tabnlating mechanism for-such machines.
My invention has for its principal object to provide an improved denominational tabulator.
To this and other ends. my invention consists in certain features ot' construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be fully set forth herein and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings. I have shown my invention applied to a tIonarch front-strike typewriter` but it will be obvious that said invention is applicable to other styles of typewriting machines. The base portion of the main trame ot' the machine shown in the drawings` comprises side plates l connected together at their rear endsl by a back plate 2 and a hori'/.ontal sheltl Il. I prefer to so adjust the lower section 95 of the link 91 that the pin .90 does not normally stand at the upper end of the slot in said lower section of the link but stands a little below the upper end of so as to provide afsuitable amount of lost motion between the rack lifter and the tabulator key to insure that the carriage shall not bereleased before the tabulator stop is in position to arrest it. I prefer to so space the slots-T9 in the frame 67 that each'of said slots stands directly in front ofthe space between two of the sub-levers 31. This space in thel present instance is a little wider. than the distance .between the levers 45, and the rear ends of the links SO are accordingly slightly fanned inward to bring them into proper coperation with said levers. It will be perceived that thc motion of each of the links SOis a straight fore and aft sliding motion and that. .that part of each of said links that passes between two of the sub-levers 31 lies in a straight fore and aft direction. The result is thatthere is no interference between the sub-levers and the links. It will also lbe perceived that by the use of the system of rock shafts 66 the tabulator keys 69 may be spaced any desired distance apart without affecting the spacing of the links S0. As shown in the present instance said keys eX-- tend only part way across the keyboard, a space being left on the right for the keys 10() of a column jumper (not shown), but itwill be obvious that if no column jumper is used the series of keys could be disposed centrally of the keyboard bya slight modification of the length and positioning ofthe rock shafts. It will be understood that when I refer to the members 66 as rock shafts,.I do notmean 'that' they are necessarily round; solid rods,
but that sleeves or yoke frames or any of the well known mechanical equivalents of rock shafts may be used instead," or some of said rock members may beof one kind and some of another. So broadly new to provide any horizontally and oscillatory members It will thus be seen v far as I am aware it is whatever in the rela-tion in which, and for which the rock shafts 66 are used in the present construct-ion. It is also new, so far as I am aware, to vdistribute a series of tabulator keys across of a typewriting machine and to transfer and translate the motion' of said keys by transversely and horizontally arranged rocking members of any description to. Ia fore and-aft motion near'the middle of the machine and to transfer this motion by foreand-af-t moving members to points4 near the back of the machine where the t'abulator stop mechanism is usually situated.
Various changes in the detailsy of construction and arrangement may be made. without departing from my invention'.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y 1. In a typewriting machine and tabulatf ing mechanism, the combination of a Ycarthe keyboard riage; a series of tabulator stops; a frame having a series of slots in its u per side; a series of bars for operating sai stops, said bars slidably mounted in said slots; and a series of key operated rock shafts having arms extending into said slotsv and adapted to operate said bars and to retain them 4in position in said slots.

In a typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism, th'e combination of a carriage; a series of tabulator stops; a series of character key levers and printing ,instrunientalities operated thereby; a series of de# pressible tabulator keys arranged in a transverse row at the back olf the key board; a series of tabulator key levers extending from said keys\toward the back of the machine; a series of transverse horizontal rock shafts on a series of arms on said rock shafts; and means including a series of connectingbars connecting said arms with said stops.

In a typewriting machine and tabulat-'t ing` mechanism, tliecoinbiiiation of a eari Ir-iage;a series'of tabulator stops; a series of tabulator key levers, onesfo'r each stop; a series of transverse horizontal rock shafts.` each having one of said key levers mounted on one end thereof, and each having an arin mounted thereon at a distance from said key lever; and means whereby said arms operate said-stops.
7. ln a typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism, the combination of a car-i riage; a series of tabulator keys; a series of` rock shafts lying transversely of theinachine and to lwhich said keys are connected; a
