[Class 100 (iv).] Type - lever actions. - Rolling levers, pivotally connected at the front and rear ends to the keylevers and action-links respectively, have the rear ends arranged in alignment, and are so graded in curvature and length, short keylevers being connected to long rolling levers and vice versa, that the keys have uniform touch and dip, and the force transmitted to, and the movement and acceleration of the rear ends of the rolling lever are uniform. In the action shown in the Figure, key-levers 56 are connected by means of rolling levers 64, links 72, rocking arms 73, and links 75 to the heels 76 of type-levers 52 mounted in a segment 51. The key-levers and rocking arms are pivoted on straight rods 58, 74 in a guidecomb 57. The rolling levers are supported by a plate 65, provided with a guide-comb 70, and are formed with a projection 67, normally resting on a pad 68, and a curved surface 69 which at the inner end 69 is tangential to the projection. A recess may be provided between the projection and curved surface. The keylevers are parallel and are in substantially the same planes as the associated rolling levers and links 72, the links being of uniform length. The rocking arms 73 have uniform movement, and consist of vertical arms of uniform length and inwardly bent arms which are connected by the links 75 to the heels 76, the links being normal to the segment, and the reels and bent arms being of increasing length from the middle to the sides of the system. When the segment 51 is arranged to shift, the rocking arms 73 may be so disposed that the arc of movement is bisected by a line passing through the axis 74 and parallel to the direction of shift. On depression of any key-lever, the associated rolling lever rocks initially about the projection 67, and during further depression, the curved surface 69 rolls on the plate 65 and the typelever is accelerated. The rolling levers may be formed with weights for completing movement of the type-lever by momentum. The pivotal connections of the rolling levers and the links 72 are arranged above the line joining the pivotal connections of the key-levers and rolling levers, and the links and rocking arms 73. The pivot-arrangement permits displacement of the type-levers, for example to permit of cleaning, without disturbing the key-levers, the rolling levers and the links 72 being rocked upwardly, and the links 75 and the rocking arms performing their usual movements. Links 79 for actuating the universal bar 89, and returning-springs 81 may be arranged in the manner described in Specification 411,050. Relay actions.-To permit of power actuation, the rocking arms 73 are connected by springs 94 to rocking arms 91 having lugs 95 for engaging actuating-devices. The pivotarrangement of the rolling levers 64 enables the actuating-devices to be controlled by a small depression of the key-levers.
