Abstract
234,933. Smith, T. B., and Simon- Carves, Ltd. March 14, 1924. Film evaporators.-White commercial ammonium chloride crystals are obtained from crude ammonium chloride liquor by repeatedly circulating it over steam pipes until it is sufficiently concentrated and then passing it to cooling and crystallizing tanks. Referring to the plant shown in Fig. 3, chloride liquor is led to a sump at the bottom of a tank 4 and is raised to a tank 1 having a serrated edge 1<a>. The liquor overflows and passes over the lengths 2 of cast iron steam pipe, which with the boards or the like 3 placed between them form a cascade. When sufficiently concentrated, the liquor is led through pipe 8<a> to a settling tank 9, the supernatant liquor being passed through a filter-bag 11 to a distributing trough 12 whence it passes to one or other of the crystallizing tanks 14. The deposit in the tank 9 is discharged by raising the plug 15. When crystallization is complete in any of the tanks 14, the mother-liquor is passed to the tank 1. The temperature of the chloride liquor in the latter is raised to about 90‹ C. and as the dissociation temperature of ammonium chloride is not approached no corrosion occurs.
