Abstract

A barbecue comprises a shelf (5) having at least two openings (6) formed therein and covers (7) provided to fit over and close the openings. Ovens (8,10) can be located in the openings (6) and be closed at their upper ends by the covers (7).

Description

BARBECUE The invention relates to barbecues.

A well known type of barbecue comprises a round vessel having an open top, a perforated grill or fire-plate supported within the vessel and on which the fire is laid and a cooking shelf which is supported above the fire.

The present invention provides an improvement whereby at least one oven is provided for use with the barbecue and an opening is formed in the cooking shelf to receive the oven.

Accordingly, the invention provides a barbecue comprising: a vessel having an open top; at least one oven adapted for use with the barbecue; and an opening in the cooking shelf adapted to receive the oven.

Embodiments of the invention are described below, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a vertical cross-sectional view through a barbecue; Figure 2a is a plan view of a fire-plate of the barbecue; Figure 2b is a side view of the fire plate; Figure 3 is a plan view of a cooking shelf of the barbecue; Figure 4 is a perspective view of first oven for use with the barbecue; Figure 5 is a plan view of a cover; Figure 6 is a perspective view of a second oven for use with the barbecue; Figure 7a is a plan view of a trivet for use in a second oven; Figure 7b is a side view of the trivet; and Figure 8 is a plan view of an alternative form of cooking shelf.

As can be seen from the drawings, the barbecue comprises a rounded vessel 2 which has an open top and is supported on legs 3. A perforated grill or fire-plate 4 is supported within the vessel 2 and is adapted to have the fire laid on it. A cooking shelf 5 is supported within the vessel 2 above the fire-plate and is formed with two openings 6. Covers 7 are configured to fit over and close the openings 6 and are made of solid plate so that they can be used as hot plates or griddles when located in the openings. The covers are provided with handles 70 so that they can be used as frying pans. As shown in Figure 3, the cooking shelf is in the form of a grill made of parallel bars 50. As an alternative (not shown), the cooking shelf may be a perforated plate.

A first oven 8 for Tandoori cooking is formed of an oval length of tube 9 open at both ends to form a container configured to fit into an opening 6 and be supported on the first plate 4 to extend through the grill 5 to a level above the grill. One of the covers 7 can be fitted onto the upper end of the tube 9 to close and provide a cover for this oven. The top edge of the tube 9 is formed with notches 90 which serve to locate skewers 13.

A second oven 10 is formed of a second, shorter oval length of tube 11 which is closed at one end by a base 12. The second oven provides a container configured to fit into an opening 6 in the cooking grill 5 and adapted to be suspended from the grill with the base above the fire-plate 4. A cover 7 can be placed over the open top of the oven 10 to close it and provide a cover for the oven.

A trivet 14 formed of a perforated metal plate is located within the second oven 10 and has four feet 15 to raise it slightly offthe base 12.

The barbecue will normally be supplied with a plurality of skewers 13 for use in the Tandoori oven.

An alternative form of cooking shelf 5 is shown in Figure 8. This shelf is only half formed as a grill of parallel bars 50. The other half is formed as a solid plate 51 with two circular openings 6 for circular ovens 8 and 10.

Claims (8)

1. CLAIMS 1. A barbecue comprising: a vessel having an open top; at least one oven adapted for use with the barbecue; and an opening in the cooking shelf adapted to receive the oven.
2. 2. A barbecue as claimed in Claim 1, wherein a first oven comprises a container configured to fit into an opening in the cooking shelf and adapted to be suspended from the cooking shelf
3. 3. A barbecue as claimed in Claim 2, further comprising a trivet adapted to be supported within the container.
4. 4. A barbecue as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising a fire-plate supported within the vessel below the open top.
5. 5. A barbecue as claimed in Claim 4, wherein a second oven comprises an open-ended tubular container configured to fit into an opening in the cooking shelf and to be supported on the fire-plate to extend above the level of the cooking shelf.
6. 6. A barbecue as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a cover is provided for the or each oven.
7. 7. A barbecue as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the cover is provided with a handle so that it can be used as a frying pan.
