Abstract

Phosphoric acid is obtained in addition to hypophosphites and phosphites by treating an aqueous suspension of an alkaline-earth hydrate with phosphorus and burning the phosphoretted hydrogen which is evolved. In an example, sticks of phosphorus are placed in milk of lime in an autoclave and the air replaced by nitrogen. The temperature is raised in order to start the reaction and when the pressure has risen to six atmospheres the phosphoretted hydrogen is allowed to pass out of the autoclave, through lime towers to ovens in which it is burned to phosphoric acid.ALSO:Alkaline earth phosphites are obtained in addition to hypophosphates by treating an aqueous suspension of the alkaline-earth hydrate with phosphorus at an elevated temperature. In an example, sticks of phosphorus are placed in milk of lime in an autoclave and the air replaced by nitrogen. The temperature is raised in order to start the reaction and when the pressure has risen to six atmospheres the phosphoretted hydrogen is allowed to pass out of the autoclave, through lime towers to ovens in which it is burned to phosphoric acid. After expelling the phosphoretted hydrogen remaining in the liquor in the autoclave by means of a stream of nitrogen it is filtered. The precipitate which consists of lime and calcium phosphite is washed, dissolved in hydrochloric acid and re-precipitated by means of caustic soda free from carbonate. The filtrate is neutralized by passing carbon dioxide, filtered after heating, and finally evaporated in vacuo in order to obtain hypophosphite.
