Abstract

233,842. Burrows, R. A., Sinnatt, F. S., Slater, L., and Simpkin, N. April 1, 1924. Purifying liquids.-The finely divided material held in suspension in the water used for washing coal is separated therefrom by the addition of a coagulant or flocculating agent, without undue agitation, and allowing the mixture to settle with as little motion as possible. The reagent is preferably added to the water just prior to its entering the settling tank. One or more of the following may be used :-lime, caustic soda or other hydroxides of alkalies or alkaline earths, aluminium sulphate, sodium aluminate, magnesium chloride, sodium silicate, silicic acid, silica sol, casein, glue, gelatine, sodium stearate, or albumen.
