Abstract
233,720. Redfern, C. G., (Hartstoff-Metall Akt. Ges. (Hametag)). May 7, 1925. Granulating. - Molten metal from a container 7 is fed into the path of a rapidly rotating beater 8 mounted on a rotary shaft 9 inside a closed rotating drum 1 mounted on a shaft 2 and containing a liquid 5 such as tetralin, paraffin &c. which has no action on the metal. The molten metal is shattered by the beater 8 and caused to fly into the liquid 5 which owing to the rotation of the drum 1 mounts up the side of the latter as shown. The metal granules are directed during their fight by the rotating liquid and travel to the bottom of the drum 1 in a spiral path as indicated. To prevent oxidation of the molten metal before it reaches the beater 8 the space above the liquid 5 may be filled with an inert gas such as carbon dioxide. The beater 8 may be in the form of a flat circular broom with radial bristles or rods, and the arms of the beater or bristles of the broom may be coated with a liquid such as tetralin to prevent the metal adhering thereto.
