233,275. Ross, D., Weiser, R. F., and British Mannesmann Tube Co., Ltd. Sept. 22, 1924. Locating leaks.-Relates to apparatus for testing pipes joints 1, of the type which comprises an expansible segmental casing adapted to be inserted into the piping to be tested and to carry an india-rubber &c. ring 6<1> having lateral projections 6 forming, in conjunction with the piping, a closed chamber 7 in communication with a pressure gauge, means for expanding said casing, and means for forcing fluid under pressure into the chamber 7 for the purpose of ascertaining from the pressure gauge whether or not there is leakage through the pipe joint. The segments 4 of the expansible casing which are spaced apart and arranged to constitute a broken ring, are moved longitudinally to expand said casing by means of an hydraulic cylinder 9 and ram 10, which are provided with coned surfaces 11, 12 adapted to co-operate with corresponding surfaces 13, 14 respectively on the segments 4. Fluid under pressure is fed to and discharged from the cylinder 9 through a duct 15, while the testing fluid is admitted to the chamber 7 through a duct 8. The segments 4 are supported by front and back plates 17, 18 which may be provided with rollers 19 for facilitating positioning of the apparatus. The apparatus is pushed or withdrawn lengthwise of a pipe by means of a tube &c. 20, while the pressure gauge is arranged in communication with the duct 8.
