Abstract

An elastic seal for static sealing of the thin-walled cover 1 of an internal combustion engine, such as a valve cover or cylinder head cover, which has a surrounding attachment flange 2 with a surrounding groove 5 or the like for reception of the elastic seal 6. In order to facilitate manufacture and repair and to achieve an interlocking attachment of the seal 6 to the cover 1, the elastic seal 6 has a projection 9 engaging round the outer edge 8 of the attachment flange 2, while a hook-shaped collar 10 of the projection 9 engages behind the attachment flange 2.

Description
Seal for covers of internal combustion engines 1 -1 The present invention relates to an elastic seal for static sealing of a thin-walled cover of an internal combustion engine, such as a valve cover or cylinder head cover for example, where the thinwalled cover has a surrounding attachment flange with means for receiving the elastic seal.
Thin-walled covers for internal combustion engines, such a valve covers or cylinder head covers for example, comprise elastic seals for static sealing. The known seals on cylinder head covers are as a rule snap fitted or vulcanised directly on to the cylinder head cover. The elastomer in vulcanised on seals is either injection moulded into an existing groove and mechanically wedged in (DE 4 202 860) or it is bonded to the surface by an adhesive (GB 1 263 077) However the adhesive should be dispensed with if possible to allow replacement of the seal in the case of repair. Mechanical wedging-in is only usable to a limited extent, because the cover material has to deform well for this. However the cover materials which are employed as a rule are brittle cast alloys, which tend to form cracks. Elastomers which have good self-adhesion to the cover material are preferably considered for mechanically anchored seals.
In the course of manufacture of the known cylinder head covers with seals, a sticky layer builds up on the mould surface of the vulcanising is torn out of a groove cylinder head cover destroyed. In order to be taken 1 -1 mould after some time. The adhesion of the seal to the vulcanising mould is then stronger than the adhesion to the cylinder head cover, so that the seal during the removal of th the mould and thus oid this the vulcanising ntervals and nterference with e f rom.
to av mould has apart at regular cleaned, which leads to undesirable i production.
The object of the present invention is to provide a seal of the kind initially referred to have the recited disadvantages of the interlocking clamping chieved.
which does not known designs and of the seal to the This object, nvention in that more projections the attachment flange, the or each projection having a hook-shaped collar which engages behind the attachment flange.
Where there these projections on the periphery o the whole peripher also possible the region of flange of the holes. In the one piece with attachment in which an cover is a is met according the elastic seal which engage round the outer edge of to the present comprises one or is a plurality of projections can be arranged only at some places f the attachment flange or run over v of the attachment 'flange; it is arrange that to the attachmen cover engage latter case elastic ele screws for soli pro- ection or these projections in holes through the seal ments for d-borne s The projecti clamp round the attachment flange i manner and thus fix the seal on in the attachment these attachment can be designed in insulation of the ound.
ons on the seal n interlockIng cover. The seal - 3 1 1 cl ) 1, with the one or more projections can be made separately and then be pulled on to the attachment flange; however it is advantageous to injection mould and vulcanise this seal round the attachment flange of the cover, whereby the seal can be retained by the attachment flange and cannot be torn away when opening the vulcanising mould.
If in addition the attachment holes are also injection moulded the retention is further improved.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a portion of the seal according to the invention for a cylinder head cover, in cross section away from the attachment holes and Figure 2 shows a corresponding portion in the region of an attachment hole for fixing the cylinder head cover on the engine block of an internal combustion engine.
The cylinder head cover 1, not shown in detail serves to cover the valve chamber of an internal combustion engine. The cylinder head cover 1 comprises a surrounding attachment flange 2, which is provided with a plurality of attachment holes 3 for reception of attachment screws 4, by means of whIch the cylinder head cover 1 is fixedly attached to the engine block, not shown, of the internal combustion engine. The static seal between the cylinder head cover 1 and the engine block is 3 effected by the seal 6 arranged in a surrounding groove 5 in the attachment flange 2. This seal 6, which is preferably made from an elastomer, has a sealing lip 7 protruding in the direction of the engine block and a projection 9 engag.,ng round the -.1 outer edge 8 of the attachment flange 2, which projection has a collar 10 engaging behind the surface 11 of the attachment flange 2 facing away from the engine block. The collar 1.0 is hook-shaped in cross section to engage in another surrounding groove in the surface 11. The seal 6 is thus connected, in interlocking manner to the attachment lange 2.
In the region of the attachment holes 3 the material of the elastic seal 0' penetrates through the attachment hole 3, apart from a bore 12 for reception of the attachment screw 4 and thus forms an elastic element 14 surrounding the shank 13 of the screw for -nsulation against solid-borne sound.
The projection flange 2 is provide 9 running round the attachment with a likewise surrounding support lip 15 for supporting a sound insulating cover 16, not shown in detail, as well as a detent ' -Lp, 171 which engages in a recess 18 in the sound insulating cover 16 and connects this to the cylinder head cover 1.
