Stationary-cutter apparatus.-Relates to skiving machines of the type described in the parent Specification, and comprises detail improvements. The upper roll 14, comprising toothed discs, those nearer the inner end of the roll having mora deeply penetrating teeth, terminates short of the end of the scarf and has a stationary circular member 203 with a tangential portion 205 and recess 204 for guiding the thin edge of the workpiece. The pivot for the upper roll carrying frame is placed a distance above the level of the top of the under roll equal to the radius of the upper roll plus the maximum thickness of the workpiece, in order that the upper roll may move nearly in a vertical straight line. The scarf-defining member 207 projects slightly below the surface of the portion 205. In order that the member 207 shall move vertically without turning, as the upper roll swings, 'the member is carried on an arm, surrounding the upper roll shaft and contacting with the outer end of the knife carrier. To prevent incautious presentation of a workpiece to the knife whilst the latter is held inoperative by the lever 89 there is provided a lever 211, engaging a stop 213, which is projected through the work-table, and a cam 212 on the lever shaft 90. To lift the knife edge clear of the slide 82 when the spring pressure is removed, a further cam piece 215 on the shaft 90 engages a face 216 on the knife carrier 56.
