Abstract
232,684. Olsen, S. D., and Taylor, J. H. Jan. 24, 1924. Steering-gear.-Ship steering gear is operated by one or more pairs of hydraulic rams carrying rollers e acting on the edge of a cam a, supported on rollers b and connected to the shaft c to be driven, the cam being so shaped that a varying torque is applied to the shaft. Control is effected by a valve n which in its mid-position allows pressure to be exerted on both rams to hold the cam and thus avoid backlash. The motor is arranged in a closed-circuit system, comprising a continuously running pump h, a pressure accumulator l and an exhaust reservoir m.
