Abstract

A retractable tray 17 is mounted within a glove box of a vehicle in its retracted position, which glove box has a pivoting lid 15 that covers the retracted tray and which tray has a weakened portion 20 to assist in the failure or breakage of the tray if the glove box lid is urged against the tray in its extended position, such as in the event of an accident (figure 3). The tray may slide between its retracted and extended positions. The weakened portion may be in the form of a transverse groove. The tray may be made from a non-brittle plastics material. The tray may not become completely detached after failure. There may be a depression in the upper surface of the tray.

Description

An amenity trav for a Motor Vehicle This invention relates to motor vehicles and in particular to an amenity tray for a motor vehicle.
It is known to provide a motor vehicle with a dashboard in which is formed a storage or glovebox for the storage of small items. The inner surface of the glovebox lid is sometimes provided with one or more indentations which can be used as an amenity tray.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved amenity tray for a motor vehicle.
According to the invention there is provided a glovebox mounted amenity tray assembly for a motor vehicle, the assembly comprising a substantially flat tray member and a support means to allow for movement of the tray member from a retracted position, in which the tray member is positioned within the glovebox, to an in use position in which the tray member projects outwardly from the glovebox, the glovebox having a pivotable lid that can be closed to conceal the amenity tray assembly from view when the tray member is in said retracted position wherein the tray member has a weakened portion to assist failure of the tray member if the glovebox lid is urged there against when the tray member is in said in use position.
The support means may be arranged to slidably support the tray member along both of its longitudinal edges to allow the tray member to be slid from said retracted position to said in use position.
The weakened portion may be a transversely extending groove in the tray member.
Advantageously, the groove extends across the entire lower surface of the tray member from one longitudinal edge to the other.
Preferably the tray member is made from a non-brittle plastics material.
The upper surface of the tray member may have a depression therein.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing of which: Fig. 1 is a pictorial representation of a dashboard of a motor vehicle; Fig.2 is a cross-section through a glovebox region of a dashboard of a motor vehicle showing a utility tray according to the invention in a normal in use position; Fig.3 is a section similar to Fig.2 but showing the utility tray in a failed position; Fig.4 is a cutaway plan view of a utility tray according to the invention; and Fig.5 is a view in the direction of arrow "V" on Fig.4.
With reference to the figures there is shown a dashboard assembly 24 of a motor vehicle having an upper portion 25 and a lower portion 28. A glovebox assembly 11 is fitted into the lower portion 28 of the dashboard assembly 24 on one side of the motor vehicle.
The glovebox assembly 11 is formed by a bin member 13 pivotally connected at its lower edge by means of outwardly extending lugs 23 and pivot pins 26 to corresponding lugs 29 formed on the lower portion 28 of the dashboard 24. The glovebox bin 13 has a front wall in the form of a glovebox lid 50 which has a rib 14 extending along its upper edge and a lock assembly 33 secured to it for selectively securing the lid 15 in a closed position.
The bin 13 is mounted in a cavity 5 in the lower portion 28 of the dashboard 24, said cavity 5 being defined by a wall member 27 formed within the dashboard 24.
An amenity tray assembly 16 is attached to an upper portion of the inner wall 27 by means of attachment means in the form of slide rails 19.
The amenity tray assembly comprises of said slide rails 19 and a substantially flat tray member 17 which is slidingly supported along its longitudinal edges 10 by means of grooves 18 formed in the slide rails 19.
The tray member 17 has a weakened portion in the form of a transversely extending groove 20 which extends from one longitudinal edge 10 to the other. A pair of depressions 12 are formed in the tray member 17 near to its outer edge each of said depressions being dimensioned so as to be suitable to support the base of a drink container such as a plastic cup. A depression 30 is formed in the upper surface of the tray member which may be used to prevent small items from rolling off the tray 17 if it is used while the vehicle is in motion.
The tray member 17 can be slid from a retracted position in which it is located entirely within the cavity 5 such that upon closing of the glovebox bin 13 it is sealed from view by the lid 15 of the glovebox bin 13, to an in use position as shown in Figure 2 in which the tray member extends outwardly from the glovebox cavity 5 so that articles may be placed upon the upper surface of the tray 17 or one or more drinks containers may be placed in the depressions 12.
If while the tray is in said in use position the motor vehicle is involved in an accident then there may be contact between a body part of an occupant of the motor vehicle and the lid 15 of the glovebox assembly 11.
However, as seen in Figure 3 contact between the rib 14 and the underside of the tray 17 will, if sufficient force is exerted, cause the tray member 17 to fracture along the groove 20. The groove 20 therefore provides a specific location where failure of the tray will occur and thus predictability to the mode of failure.
In addition, if the shape of the groove is correctly chosen and the plastic material which the tray 17 is made from is not of a brittle nature then the tray 17 will fail such that the end portion does not separate from the portion of the tray member 17 remaining engaged with the grooves 18. This is an added safety benefit as it is undesirable to have loose articles within a motor vehicle during an accident as they can impinge and cause injury to the occupants of the motor vehicle.
Alternatively, an elastomeric mat may be adhered to the upper surface to prevent separation after fracture of the tray.
Although the invention has been described with reference to an amenity tray assembly in which the tray is movable from a retracted to an in use position by a sliding motion it will be appreciated that other modes of operation are possible such as for example the tray could be pivotally connected to the interior of the glovebox.
