Abstract
Salicylaldehyde and m-hydroxybenzaldehyde are prepared by reducing crude nitrated benzaldehyde with hydrosulphite and, without boiling off the sulphur dioxide, diazotizing and distilling the diazo product in a current of steam, the m-compound being extracted from the residue and the o-compound from the distillate. In an example benzaldehyde is nitrated at low temperature with nitric and sulphuric acids, the mixture poured on to ice, washed with water and dilute soda, reduced with sodium hydrosulphite, the reduction mixture treated with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite and the diazo solution decomposed by dropping into dilute sulphuric acid through which a current of steam is passing. Salicylaldehyde and some anthranil are recovered from the distillate by extraction with a solvent and the aldehyde separated by solution in alkali, filtering and reprecipitation by acid. The m-hydroxybenzaldehyde is separated from the residue in the still by filtering off the tar and extracting with ether. Specification 22398/09 is referred to.
