Abstract
A moulded plastics luminaire comprises a circular lens (2) formed around its periphery with an inner mounting ring (5) and a housing member (2) formed with an outer mounting ring (6) and adapted to receive the inner mounting ring in sealing fitted connection. A first seal is provided between a sealing ring (3) housed in the inner mounting ring and an inclined annular surface (8) on the outer mounting ring. The inner mounting ring is a snap-fit into the outer mounting ring and a second seal is provided between opposed cylindrical surfaces (9,10) on the inner and outer mounting rings.
Description
LUMINAIRES
The invention relates to luminaires.
Where luminaires are to be used in locations where there may be water and/or dust present, it is necessary for them to be water and dust proof to levels required by the standard (IEC 529) IP65. In such cases, the lens is normally fitted to the housing by screws with a rubber seal located between the components.
The present invention sets out to provide a luminaire in which a good seal is provided between the lens and a housing member but in which the lens can nevertheless be readily fitted and removed from the housing member by means of a snap-fit.
According to the present invention there is provided a luminaire comprising: a generally circular lens of moulded plastics and being formed around its periphery with an inner mounting ring; a housing member of moulded plastics and being formed with an outer mounting ring adapted to receive the inner mounting ring in sealing fitted connection; wherein a first seal is provided between a sealing ring housed in one of the mounting rings and an annular surface on the other mounting ring; and wherein means are provided on the inner and outer mounting rings such that the inner mounting ring is a snap-fit into the outer mounting ring.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded cross-sectional view through the housing and lens of a luminaire; and
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view showing the mounting connection between the housing and the lens with the inner mounting ring of the lens received within the outer mounting ring of the housing member.
As shown in Figure 1, the luminaire comprises a generally circular housing member 1, a generally circular lens 2 and a silicon sealing ring 3. Other components of the luminaire have been omitted. When the luminaire is fitted to a ceiling, the housing member will be located above the lens as shown in the drawings.
The lens 2 is formed of a part spherical dish 4 with a mounting ring 5 formed around its periphery. The mounting ring 5~provides the inner ring of a connection between the lens and the housing member.
The housing member has a mounting ring 6 formed at its periphery which provides the outer ring of the connection and is adapted to receive the inner mounting ring to form a sealing fitted connection between the lens and the housing member.
Referring to Figure 2, it can be seen that the sealing ring 3 is located in a groove 7 formed on the inner ring 5. In the fitted condition, an annular surface 8 formed on the outer ring 6 bears against the sealing ring to form a first seal between the lens and the housing member. The annular surface 8 is inclined to the axis of the luminaire at an angle of about 20 ; this helps to form a tight seal whilst enabling the connection between the lens and housing member to be readily made and broken.
The surface 8 may be purely frustoconical or may be slightly concave to help increase the area of contact with the sealing ring.
Just above the first seal, a cylindrical surface 9 on the outer ring 6 contacts an opposed cylindrical surface 10 on the inner ring 5. These opposed cylindrical surfaces 9 and 10 provided a second seal between the lens and the housing member.
Just above the second seal, a radial surface 11 formed on the free end of the outer ring 6 contacts an opposed radial surface 12 on a shoulder 13 formed on the inner ring 5. These opposed radial surfaces provide a third seal between the lens and the housing.
The cylindrical surface 9 on the outer ring 6 is interrupted by an annular recess 14 which is adapted to receive circumferentially spaced beads 15 which are formed on the cylindrical surface 10 of the inner ring 5. In the preferred embodiment there are three beads 15 each having a circumferential extent of about 600. The beads 15 cooperate with the recess 14 to form a snap-fit. The spaces between the beads provide for sufficient flexibility for the snap-fit to be made and broken without undue effort although one or more notches (not shown) will be provided such that the end of a screwdriver can be inserted between the opposed radial surfaces 11 and 12 for disconnection of the lens from the housing member.
In order to obtain good seals between the mating surfaces and a good snap-fit between the inner and outer rings, it is necessary for the components to be manufactured to close tolerances. This is preferably achieved by moulding the housing member and lens of polycarbonate material. The polycarbonate material may be glass-filled.
