Abstract
A solution of gelatine or glue is freed from crystalloid or semi-colloid impurities by an ultrafiltration process, preferably carried out with the application of pressure or suction and at a temperature at which the solution does not gelatinize. The solution may be stirred, or filtered upwardly, to obviate clogging of the ultrafilter membrane, which may be prepared by coagulation of a four per cent collodion solution in acetic acid. The process may be repeated a number of times, the purified product being diluted before ultrafiltration, and flocculent impurities appearing in the course of the process may be removed by passing the solution through an ordinary filter. The ultrafiltration may be assisted by passing an electric current through the solution, one electrode touching, or being extended upon, that side of the ultrafilter which is in contact with the air, and the other electrode being either immersed in the solution or, preferably, separated therefrom by a diaphragm which may also act as an ultrafilter. The solution is preferably maintained as neutral as possible during the process.
