Abstract
121,141. Satow, S. June 28, 1917. Albumens are extracted in a pure and undenatured condition from soya bean and other vegetable materials by crushing the raw material, removing oil therefrom by a solvent, then removing the solvent by a vacuum or by air at a low temperature, then extracting the albumens by means of water, alkali or salt solution, or other non-alcoholic liquid which will not denature the albumens, removing colloidal &c. impurities from the extract until a transparent clear solution is obtained, and finally precipitating the albumens from the clear solution. The removal of impurities from the extract may be effected by first passing the extract through a centrifugal separator and then filtering and fractionally precipitating the liquid by adding a little sulphuric or sulphorous acid, allowing to stand, decanting, and filtering; another method consists in carefully precipitating the albumens together with impurities by an acid (sulphuric or acetic), decanting, redissolving the albumens in dilute sulphurous or hydrochloric acid, and filtering. The wet albumens may be finally dried in vacuo, and are suitable for use in the manufacture of plastic materials &c.
