Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and xylene, after purification by acid and washing with water are neutralized without formation of emulsions by agitating with kieselguhr or fullers earth that has been impregnated with alkali and dried. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of solid carriers such as kieselguhr, fullers earth, and the like, impregnated with lyes. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Mineral oils and aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and xylene after purification by acid and washing with water, are neutralized without formation of emulsions by agitation with Kieseleguhr or fuller's earth that has been impregnated with alkali and dried. In an example, 100 lb. of mineral oil is treated with sulphuric acid, washed, and then agitated with 1 lb. of Kieselguhr that has been impregnated with 1 lb. of 40 per cent soda lye and dried. On standing, the Kieselguhr settles at the bottom. The oil is separated and washed with water. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of solid carriers such as Kieselguhr, fuller's earth and the like impregnated with lyes. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
