Abstract

231,484. Peerless Roll Leaf Co., Inc., (Assignees of Grupe, W. F.). March 31,1924, [Convention date]. Feeding webs.-A strip-feeding mechanism, particularly for feeding metallized transfer strips in blocking-presses, but applicable for use in printing and other machines, comprises a number of pairs of feed rollers adapted to feed a corresponding number of separate strips, means for adjusting the feed movement of each pair of rollers independently of the other pairs, a single train of gears for driving all the feed rollers, and means for driving the gears in synchronism with the press. Fig. 1 shows a blocking-press adapted to employ three transfer strips. The strip rolls 11, braked by pivoted weighted arms 110 engaging their peripheries, rest in a tray 10, and the strips pass under a guide 13 formed as a coiled spring to reduce friction, a weighted arm 111 serving to detach the strip from the die 14, and a second coiled spring guide 15. The strips then pass between pairs of feed rollers comprising rollers 38<a>, 38<b>, 38<c>, Fig. 3, and coacting rubber or rubber-covered rollers 105, and thence to take-up discs 106<a>, 106<b>, 106<c>. The rollers 38<a>, 38<b>, 38<c> are mounted on ball bearings 58, Fig. 10, and are driven by clutches 51 at each end on shafts 44 carrying pinions 39<a>, 39<b>, 39<c>, Figs. 9 and 10, geared together by intermediate gears 40<a>, 40<b>, 40<c> and driven from a gear 37 on a shaft 32. The shaft 32 is driven by a pinion and a rack 29, Fig. 1, adjustably connected to a crank 24 driven by gearing 21, 22 from the main shaft 20 of the machine. The gear 37 is loose on the shaft 32 and is adapted to be operatively connected thereto by a clutch 74, Fig. 9, actuated by a pedal 61, Fig. 1, and the gears 39<a>, 39<b>, 39<c> are loosely mounted on the shafts 44 between friction discs 40, 45, Fig. 10. The clutches 51 comprise discs 53 fixed to the shafts 44 and having tapered recesses housing spring-pressed balls adapted to grip the feed roller in one direction of movement only. To provide for individual adjustment of the feed by each pair of feed rollers, adjustable stops are provided to limit the throw of the clutch discs 53. On the end of each of the feed roller shafts 44 opposite to the driving pinion is a gear 96, Fig. 6, meshing with a loose gear 95 carrying a stop pin 94. One end of this pin coacts with a pin 100 carried by a rotatable head 83 graduated to facilitate setting and clamped after adjustment by a nut 84<a> on its shaft. The opposite end of the pin 94 coacts with a pin 92 on a pivoted member 88 carrying a brake 90, Fig. 8, adapted to coact with a smooth part 91 of the feed roller. The friction discs 40, 45 allow the pinions 39<a>, 39<b>, 39<c> to complete their movements after the arrest of the shafts 44. The take-up discs 106<a>, 106<b>, 106<c> are frictionally mounted on their shaft 107, which is driven continuously by a belt 108 either directly or shown in Fig. 1, or by an intermediate belt 124, Fig. 9.
