Abstract

231,250. Cope, H. A., (Kohler Ges., A. & W.). Jan. 4, 1924. Power hammers.-In a spring hammer operated by a lever coupled to a crank the stroke of the tup is varied during operation by varying the relative lengths of the arms of the lever. A sliding tup 1 is reciprocated by a spring lever 4 engaged at 14 by a floating lever 15 which is oscillated by a crank 30 and sliding block 29. The lever 15 is pivoted to a control lever 11 which is adapted to allow the pivot 16 to move, under the working stresses, up or down and then hold it in the adjusted position. This may be effected by connecting the lever to a piston 25 which is normally held by fluid in the ends of the cylinder 18 but which can be allowed to move up or down according as a slide valve 28 is moved down or up by a treadle 22, the fluid passing through passages 23, 20 and past a non-return valve 21. The ]ever 6 for actuating the valve 28 is pivoted to the piston-rod 8 so that movement of the piston 25 brings the valve 28 back to its middle position. When the machine is not operating the fulcrum member 16 can be loosened and fixed in another position if desired.
