230,683. Crick, W., and Tilson, J. E. June 6, 1924. Connecting uppers to insoles. - A felt insole 1 is channelled at 2 round its marginal edge and split so as to form two lips 4, 5. There is then applied to the upper face of the two lips and the centre part 9 of the insole a thick coat of rubber solution uniting the lips and rendering the centre part waterproof. A hardening solution such as glue, gum, or starch solution, or paraffin wax is applied to the feather 7, lip 5, and toe 8 leaving the centre part of the insole unseated. A strengthening or toughening fluid such as rubber latex or a thin rubber solution in trichlorethylene is used on the channel 2 and lip 4. The heel may be toughened or left in a natural condition as is the surface of the insole near the foot. The hardening prevents buckling of the insole when placed in a machine and also assists lasting. The toughening enables the insole to withstand strain during welting. Rubber latex or a thin solution of rubber is preferably used for toughening as it penetrates the felt while waterproofing is done with a thick rubber solution in naphtha. Merino wool felt is preferably used, but if poor quality felt is used it is gemmed after treatment. The lips 4, 5 may have a rubber insert 6 or a single lip may be used. The rubber latex may be mixed with vulcanizing agents and the insole may be vulcanized.
