Abstract

230,123. White, C. H. Sept. 29, 1923. Actuated by running axle; hand actuation; force-transmitting mechanism. - The brakes of railway wagons are adapted to be applied by winding gear driven by an axle of the vehicle through a clutch which can be put into engagement by side levers operable from the ground. Manual means for directly turning the. winding drum and means for automatically effecting the disengagement of the clutch when a predetermined pressure has been applied to the brakes, are provided. A pair of drums 9, 9<1> to which the ends of the chain 10 are connected, are freely mounted upon a countershaft 4 carried by arms 6, 6<1> connected by a cross-bar 7 and pivoted at 8, 8<1> to fixed brackets. Friction driving wheels 3, 3<1> keyed on the shaft 4 ride on driving sleeves 2, 2' fixed on the running axle 1 of the vehicle. A toothed clutch member 18 splined on the shaft 4 is adapted to be slid into engagement with corresponding teeth on one or other of the drums 9, 9<1> according to the direction of travel of the vehicle by means of levers 19, 19<1> extending from the sides of the vehicle and connected to the clutch member 18 by a sliding rod 18 and a strap 23. The chain 10 passes around pulleys 11 on the pull rod 12 connected to the brakes and also around a pulley 14 on a rod 15 slidable in a fixed bracket against the action of a spring 16. A pin projects beneath the operating strip of the clutch member 23 into a triangular frame member 17 interposed in the length of the rod 15, the arrangement being such that when in the application of the brakes the tension in the chain becomes sufficient to overcome the spring 16 the rod 15 slides and the side members of the frame 17 acting against the pin effect disengagement of the clutch and thus limit the braking pressure. The drum 9 can be turned directly for applying the brakes by hand wheels 28, 28' and gearing 26, 27. Instead of a pair of drums, a single drum and a clutch member at each end thereof may be provided and the drum may be mounted upon the axle of the vehicle. Means for controlling the brakes from the top of a wagon or the interior of a brake van may be provided.
