Abstract

229,941. Harmatta, J. Aug. 14, 1924. Pipes.-In the continuous manufacture of welded pipes from strip metal, the strip is drawn through a skelping die, and the slit in the pipe is then engaged by a guide to convey the pipe in a straight line to an electric resistance welding apparatus. The strip 5 is drawn through a skelping-die 2 having a steel lining 3 and a cut away outlet in which is supported a grooved roller 6 having a guiding fin 9. The pipe then passes through a smoothing-die 11 and then between a pair of adjustable rollers 12 for pressing the edges of the joint together. The pipe then passes through the welding-apparatus which consists of a roller electrode 14 connected to one pole of the circuit and engaging the seam and an electrode connected to the other pole of the circuit and consisting of a pair of pressure rollers 15 and a roller 17. The pipe then passes through smoothing-rollers 18, 19 and is drawn to gauge through a die 21.
