Abstract

712,574. Making metal tubes ; bending ; welding by pressure. BUNDY TUBING CO. Aug. 23, 1952, No. 21229/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) A metal tube is formed from a continuous strip of metal 2 by a tube mill 1, having a plurality of rollers, and the longitudinal joint is first tack welded and then heated and subjected to pressure to cause recrystallization growth which extends completely from one tack to another across an interface and thereby completely weld the joint. During its formation a non-oxidizing or reducing gas is introduced into the tube through a pipe 6. The tack welding is effected by rotary electrodes 8 supplied with alternating current and which engage the tube on opposite sides of the seam. The tube then passes into a housing 15 where it is subjected to electrical resistance heating by electrodes 17, 18, 19 supplied with current from a transformer 16<SP>1</SP>, and is fed through a pair of squeezing rolls 20 to effect the pressure welding. A non-oxidizing or reducing gas is admitted to the housing at 21. A water jacketed cooler 22, 23 is disposed adjacent the housing. The tube may be heated uniformly throughout its circumference or it may be heated and plastically deformed only in the vicinity of the joint in which case the edges of the tube may be scalloped or serrated to facilitate the pressure welding. Examples are given of the temperatures at which the recrystallization occurs.
