Abstract

843,967. Making gilled tubes; welding by pressure. BUSSE, F. Dec. 6, 1957 [Dec. 11, 1956], No. 37956/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] In making a finned tube, especially for heat-exchangers of gas-cooled atomic power plant a U or channel-shaped strip is wound helically around the tube and the base of the U or channel is electric resistance seam-welded to the tube. A flat metal strip is continuously drawn from a reel, shaped to U-section 2 and then wound helically around the tube 4, Fig. 3, being fed either to contact the tube in advance of a cooled roller electrode 5 engaging the base of the U or directly to the electrode. The pitch of the helix is twice the width of the shaped strip. A second cooled roller electrode 6 is pressed against the tube and the two electrodes are connected to the secondary of a transformer. Two such strips may be wound, preferably simultaneously, on the tube when each roller electrode engages one of the strips. Three or four strips may be welded to the tube. The walls of the U may be spread apart as in Fig. 7 as they approach the tapered electrodes 5, 5a, or the walls may be spread before the strips are wound on the tube and are returned to correct shape after welding. The rollers, which may be trued during welding, are arranged side-by-side or are spaced by 180 degrees around the tube. The tube or base of the U-section strip may be provided with projections 12, Fig. 9, to ensure that rapid heating and welding is effected. In this case the U has a curved base and the rollers have corresponding curved surfaces and after welding the strips are given a rectangular U-section by means 14.
