Abstract
415,109. Makingtubes. BROADFIELD, W. H., c/o Forrester, Ketley, & Co., 75, New Street, Birmingham. Nov. 18, 1932, Nos. 32612/32 and 2709/33. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] A reel 10 of strip metal for tube making is welded to the previous strip end at 11 and passes to a preheating furnace 12 (800‹ C.) and is bent up to open tube form in rolls 18. It then passes through another furnace 20, where it is heated to 1100‹ C. and then to 1300‹ C. and passes between guide rollers 24 to a welder 27 where the edges are heated by oxy-acetylene jets 29 to welding temperature while the side and bottom are cooled by steam or water jets 32 so that it withstands the pressure of the welding rolls 28 forcing the hot edges together to weld them. The tube then passes through sizing rolls 33, and a polishing wheel 34 and is cut off in lengths by a travelling saw 35. It may then pass to drawing reducing, grinding, polishing or expanding means. The rollers 17, bending rolls 18 and driven feed rollers 23 may be cooled. The guide roller 24, Fig. 2, has a central rib 26 to engage the space between the bent up edges of the tube and so prevent it twisting. The steam or water jets 32 may also act to descale the tube.
