Abstract
377,655. Welding. STEEL & TUBES, Inc., 224, East 131st Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.-(Assignees of MacLaren, M. ; 38, Washington Road, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Jan. 21, 1931, No. 2001. Convention date, Jan. 22, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] In welding the seam of a tube &c. a high frequency current is induced in the tube by a transformer and the path of the current is deviated at the point of contact of the edges to be welded. A metal strip is formed into an open seamed tube, by rollers, Fig. 1 (not shown) which is passed through adjustable carriages 6, 14, 27. The carriage 6 carries an insulated seam guide 11, Fig. 3, for maintaining an air gap between the surfaces. On the carriage 14 is mounted a spiral of insulated copper tube 22 which forms the primary of a transformer fed with alternating current of a frequency well above sixty cycles per second by leads 25. Cooling water may be circulated through the tube. The carriage 27 carries roller 36 or dies; Fig. 6 (not shown) for applying welding pressure. The tube to be welded forms the secondary of the transformer and the induced current is deviated by the air gap as shown in Fig. 3. To increase the closeness of coupling of the primary and secondary coils an insulated core secured to a mandrel may be used.
