Abstract

1309195 Welding by pressure; making tubes ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 1 Oct 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 45821/71 Headings B3A and B3R In a welding process for producing a thin walled longitudinally seamed tube by generating an arc between confronting edges of formed strip stock T at a welding station W and urging the edges together by at least three squeeze rolls S, continuous measurements are made of the pressures applied by the rolls S, of the speed of the strip stock, of eddy currents produced in the welded tube, and of three electrical factors relating to the supply of high frequency electrical power to the arc, and when any one or more of the measured values deviates by a preset amount from values previously determined as producing satisfactory seam welds the particular section of welded tube is identified for subsequent rejection. The welding station is preferably followed by a shearing station at which the welded tube is cut into predetermined lengths and the electrical circuitry is arranged to ensure that a gate is opened to allow the rejection of a substandard section of pipe identified previously by the measurements made in the welding process. Measurements indicating a substandard weld may also be used to actuate physical marking of the tube length by tube marking pens. An additional parameter of the process which may be monitored and used to identify sections of welded tube requiring rejection is the location of and light intensity emitted by the welding are. An impeder is located within the tube stock at the welding station to concentrate the high frequency welding current at the edges of the stock and a controlled flow of coolant serves to maintain the impeder at a constant temperature as a further condition for producing satisfactory weld seams. The three electrical factors which are measured to provide parameters of the arc power supply are the voltage and current on plates of rectifier tubes in the welding apparatus and the current in grid circuits of oscillator tubes therein.
