Abstract

The plant includes a separation tank (12) with an outlet duct (18) leading from a lower region so that buoyant contaminants (78) entering the separation tank (12) via an inlet pipe (36) cannot leave via the duct (18). Periodically the separation tank (12) is flushed out with clean water from a supply pipe (40), flow from the separation tank (12) is prevented and buoyant contaminants are flushed over a weir by fluid supplied to the separation tank (12) by flushing means and into an adjacent temperature and acidity controlled reaction tank (14) containing sustainable cultures of microorganisms provided with nutrients. The buoyant contaminants may run by gravity into the reaction tank (14) or may be pumped there. The flushing means may comprise a pump (42) or a flushing cistern. <IMAGE>
