229,038. Braithwaite, J. H. Dec. 12, 1923. Variable-speed gearing.-A device for facilitating gear changing on a motor vehicle comprises a main speedometer B driven in the usual manner, an auxiliary speedometer A driven from the engine or gear-box, and a pointer B<2> coaxial with the main speedometer pointer C and driven by the second speedometer through variable linkage mechanism D. The variable linkage is set by the driver to correspond with the gear to which he wishes to change and the engine speed is then adjusted until the two pointers coincide when the gear change can readily be made. The arm D of the linkage slides through a trunnioned sleeve F and is further supported or located by means of wires or chains J, J<2> respectively fastened to the farthest ends D<4>, D<3> of the link and to fixed points H. The trunnions F<2> of the sleeve F are pivoted on a link K carried by pivoted arms L, L<2>, the latter of which has an operating arm M. When the arm M is rotated the sleeve I' slides up or down the arm D and therefore adjusts the leverage through which the auxiliary speedometer spindle A<2> acts on the pointer B<2>. For each gear a position of the operating arm M is found by trial in which the two pointers coincide, and the arm M can afterwards be placed and retained in any of these positions by catches M<4> or the like.
