Abstract

Controlling-apparatus, arrangements of hand gear in conjunction with.-In vehicles in which a plurality of control positions is required with substantially the same chassis, (1) the gearbox is attached to its supports in such a manner that it may be secured in any one of two or three positions so that the control mechanism is adapted to occupy the selected position, and (2) the engine is provided with a bracket or support on each side of its vertical axis, the gear-control mechanism and either a dynamo, starter motor, magneto, or other part being adapted to be attached interchangeably to either support. In the construction shown, the gearbox b' is formed with a bracket c<1> for part of the gear-control mechanism and is so bolted to a housing e that it may be moved from the position shown, in which the bracket c<1> is on the right of the engine to positions in which the bracket is on [he left or is on top of the gearbox, the latter being the normal central control. In each case the changespeed gear remains unaffected, being rotated about the axis of the engine shaft. The gear lever t may be mounted directly on the bracket c<1> when the latter is in the central position or it may be carried by a housing s which can be mounted in either of two brackets or supports u, v provided on opposite sides of the engine, the gear lever being carried by one support v and a magneto w or other part by the other support u. The gear lever is connected to the gear-box by a shaft or rod a<1> mounted in spherical bearings f, h in the housings s, c<1> respectively, this shaft having a selector arm i working within the gear-box. If the control gear is required on the other side of the engine the gear-box is rotated through 180‹ and the gear lever and magneto are interchanged. The supports for the gear lever and magneto may be carried by brackets d' formed on the flywheel housing. The cylinder block may be constructed so as to be used either for a right-hand engine or a left-hand engine by turning it through 180‹ as described in Specification 335,663, [Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of].
