Abstract

A chasing tool comprises a shank 1 carrying a generally V-shaped cross-sectioned member 2 on one end. Shank 1 has a hand-grip 3 and a head 4 at the end opposite member 2. Member 2 comprises equal or unequal flanges 5, 6 set at a right-angle to each other, and is mounted symmetrically onto the shank 1. In use the tool is used to bend the edge of roofing material 11, such as lead, over a brickwork edge, for lapping into the gap between courses of bricks 12, 13. <IMAGE>

Description

CHASING TOOL This invention relates to a chasing tool for "Chasing" or turning the edges of sheets of flexible material or metal, such as lead or roofing felt used for sealing roofs etc. into the gaps between courses of bricks, before sealing the gap with mortar or sealing mastic, and finishing by pointing the brickwork. This ensures that the edges of the watertight sheet are secured and sealed against seepage from the edges.
The known method of 'chasing' is to lay the edge of the sheet material up against the brickwork, either un-bent, or pre-folded to match approximately the position for insertion into the gap between adjacent courses of bricks, and then to use a hammer and blunt chisel to force the edge into the gap, and swage the sheet as well as possible into contact with the brickwork. This is difficult to do well with such relatively crude means, and it is not unusual for there to be sufficient looseness and play between the turned over sheet and the brickwork for any vibration due to wind or traffic to work the edge loose and crumble mortar or mastic so that the edge seal is destroyed, and rainwater can enter below the sheet.
An object of the invention is to provide a tool which, by being easier to use and manipulate than a crude hammer and chisel enables the user to carry out edge-chasing of roofing material sheets to a higher and more consistent standard than heretofore.
According to the invention there is provided a chasing tool, comprising a shank1 and carried on one end of said shank, a member comprising two webs set at an angle to each other, to give the member an over-all V-shaped cross-section.
The other end of the shank may preferrably be shaped to provide a head for striking, so that the other end can be struck with a hammer. The shank may be fitted with a hand grip.
The webs of the V-sectioned member may be of equal or unequal length, preferrably greater than 20mm. for example about 25, or even 30mm. The angle between the webs is preferrably substantially a right-angle, to enable the member to fit over the edge of a brick. When the webs are of unequal length, the member may be regarded as being of L-shaped cross section.
A chasing tool according to the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the chasing tool according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a frontal view, and Fig. 3 is an end view of the tool of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing an end view of part of a second embodiment of tool according to the invention; Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are a series of sketches showing the use of the tool.
A chasing tool according to the invention, as shown in the drawings, comprises a shank 1, carrying a generally-V-shape cross sectioned member 2 at one end. The shank 1 has a hand grip 3, and a head 4, at the other end to said member, configured for striking with a hammer, eg. in the same way as a chisel. The member 2 comprises to equal flanges 5,6 set at a right angle to each other, and extending 25mm from the angle. The member is welded to the top of shank 1, symmetrically with respect to the longitudinal axis of shank 1.
Fig. 4 shows a variant embodiment wherein the member 2 has a longer flange 7 and a shorter flange 8, so that the member 2 may be considered to be L-sectioned. The shorter flange 8 may extend about 25mm from the angle, and the longer flange 7, about 40mm from the angle.
The method of use is shown diagrammatically in Figs 5-7.
In Fig. 5, the edge 10 of a sheet 11 of flexible roof sealing mterial such as roofing lead, or roofing felt, etc. is pre-cut to overlap the gap between adjacent courses of brickwork, 12, 13.
The tool 14 is used to bend the edge and push it into the gap.
As shown in Fig. 6 the tool is then placed over the sheet where it overlies the edge of the lower course of bricks 13, and struck with a hammer 15 repeatedly as necessary. This operation forces the sheet into intimate contact with the brickwork- soft metal such as lead being moulded into the surface irregularities and pores of the bricks, and in the case of felt, the sealing compound being expressed to form bond. Close sealing contact with the brickwork is thus acheived, ensuring that there is no looseness or play in the tongue of sheet material extending into the gap. In Fig. 7, the gap is then filled with mastic or mortar, and pointed with mortar 16, to complete the edge-seal of sheet 11, and finish the appearance of the work.
The tool may be made from any suitable material, such as mild or appropriately hardened steel. Variations may be made to the dimensions, lengths and relative angles of the flanges within the scope of the invention, eg. for use with non-standard brick or stone work.
