Abstract

Cracked brick or block walls can be stitched using a galvanised mild steel stitch, in the form of a strip with notched ends, which is bent and placed into raked-out joints through and to the sides of the cracks, and mortared over. <IMAGE>

Description

DESCRIPTION The Concealed Stitch The invention relates to crack repairs to brick and block walls.
The stitch is made of galvanised mild steel 30mm wide, 2mm thick, 45Omm long with 500mum 'V' shaped tails at each end and is designed to fit between bed and perpendicular joints in a brick/block wall.
Fixing to Brick or Block wall Rake out mortar bed joint either side of the crack, rake out perpendicular joints above and below the bed joint on each side of the crack, to form a groove 40mm deep which follows the bond.
Bend the stitch using plyers to the shape of the groove, cut off any excess steel and paint the exposed end with anticorrosive paint.
Place stitch in the groove and fill with sand/cement. Repeat this every metre along the crack.
The crack is now ready to be made good as required.
Figure 1. Shows the stitch before and after Figure 2. Shows the crack in the wall and the crack with stitch following the bond of the brick/blockwork.
Fixing to Rendered Walls Cut out a groove 4Omm deep across the crack, cut perpendicular groove at each end, bend the stitch using plyers to shape of the groove place stitch in groove and cement in repeat every metre along the crack and make good as required.
Figure 3. Shows the stitch before and after bending.
Figure 4. Shows the stitches positioned along a crack.
