Abstract

228,099. Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks Akt.-Ges. Abteilung Schalke. Jan. 24, 1924, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Cementation.-In a process for the carbonization or cementation of iron, iron alloys and other metals by methane or gases rich in methane, the limits of percentages of hydrogen formed, which depend on the temperature and pressure employed and above which the reaction ceases or proceeds inversely, are not exceeded. For example, when treating iron under atmosphere pressure and at 300‹ C. the content of hydrogen should be not more than 1.7 per cent, at 445‹ C. not more than 3.4 per cent, and at 508‹ C. not more than 8 per cent. At higher temperatures the content of hydrogen increases with the temperature. Under reduced pressure, the percentages of hydrogen are increased.
