Abstract

227,801. Langevin, P. Jan. 14, 1924, [Convention date]. Thermionic relays.-The output current of a thermionic valve system is interrupted except during the time-interval between the emission of a supersonic acoustic impulse and the arrival of the echo. The sound detector is so connected that on the receipt of an echo an oscillatory E.M.F. is applied to the grid of a valve P, Fig. 1. The ammeters A, which are calibrated to give the depth directly, are connected in the output circuit of the valve L<2>, an amplifier L<1> being interposed. Current in the ammeters A is normally interrupted by a negative charge on the grid G<2>, but at the instant when an acoustic impulse is being emitted the key K is momentarily closed so as to release the charge on this grid and start the current in the ammeters, which continues to flow after the key K has been reopened until on the receipt of an echo the valve P acts to re-establish a blocking charge on the grid G<2>. The arrangement shown in Fig. 3, is designed to economise the number of batteries required. The keys K, K<1> are simultaneously and momentarily closed at the instant when the acoustic impulse is emitted, a positive charge being thus imparted to the plate P while the negative charge on the grid G<2> is discharged. Current therefore flows in the instruments A until the application by the echo of an oscillating E.M.F. to the valve P occasions the discharge of the plate p and the accumulation of a blocking charge on the grid G<2>. The above cycle of operations being repeated at a uniform rate, the reading of the instruments. A will depend on the fraction of the cycle during which current flows through them.
