Abstract
469,417. Echo-sounding and distancemeasuring apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and MYERS, L. M. Jan. 24, 1936, No. 2352. [Class 118 (ii)] The time interval in an echo-sounding apparatus is measured by the charge built up on a condenser, the condenser commencing to charge when the impulse is transmitted and being discharged when the reply signal is received. The charge-measuring instrument is shunted by a large condenser so that a continuous record of depth is given. When a pulse is transmitted a corresponding pulse is passed by winding 15 to the control triode 10, so that the grid glow discharge device 4 of the type known under the Registered Trade Mark " Thyratron " is triggered and condenser 6 begins to charge. The echo signal is passed through band-pass filter 17 to control triode 10, which now causes the " Thyratron " 4 to be extinguished, and to " Thyratron " 20 which triggers and discharges condenser 6. The charge built up on the condenser 6 is passed by amplifying valve 27 to electrostatic voltmeter 30. The condenser 31 is large enough for the leakage to be slow and acts as a smoothing condenser so that the needle of the voltmeter continuously indicates depth. The circuit parameters are made adjustable to enable the apparatus to be used over a large range of depths.
