Abstract

In the vehicle security arrangement the drivers seat is pushed from its normal position to the forwardmost position of the slides 18 where access to the foot pedals 14 and steering wheel 12 is obstructed. The seat can now be locked in this position. The seat when required can be unlocked and moved back on the slides to the normal drive position. The seat back can also be tilted forward and locked in the forward position. It can also if required be fitted with an alarm. <IMAGE>

Description

"Vehicle Security Arrangement" This invention relates to a vehicle security arrangement and in particular, but not exclusively, to a vehicle security arrangement for a road vehicle.
The contents of my earlier Application No.9108935.9 filed 26th April 1991, are incorporated herein by reference.
The figures for stolen cars and joy-riders continue to rise year after year. Various security systems exist such as the Krooklok (RTM), steering locks, vehicle burglar alarms, etc., but these can be circumvented in a variety of ways. Accordingly, a need exists for a simple security system which obviates some of the problems with existing systems.
In one aspect of this invention there is provided a vehicle security arrangement for use with a vehicle operated by a seated operator containing hand and foot controls, said arrangement comprising seat means moveable between a first position or range of positions allowing access to said hand and foot controls, and a second position in which access to at least some of said conttols is blocked or obstructed, and means for locking said seat access in the second position.
Thus, where the vehicle is a car or van, the seat means may block or obstruct access to the steering column and the foot pedals when it is in its second or forwardmost position.
The device may also be fitted to the passenger seat or seats to deter thieves or joy-riders.
The seat means is preferably mounted on a slide or other guide for movement between the first and second positions. The slide may be a three or more part extending slide to reduce the length of the component attached to the wall or floor of the driving well.
The locking means preferably comprises interengageable locking elements, one associated with the seat means and one associated with a relatively fixed structure.
The vehicle security arrangement as defined above may be fitted in cars as manufactured or a kit may be provided for retro-fitting and the invention extends to such a kit.
The invention is applicable to sliding seats which are manually slid back and forth and also to electrically or hydraulically driven seats. In the latter case it may not be necessary to provide active locking of the seat in its forwardmost or second position as the locking may be achieved passively, for example by disabling the motor drive.
In an alternative arrangement, especially for vehicles in which the front seat backs tilt forwardly to allow passengers to climb into the back of the car, the seat back may be locked into a forward tilted position to prevent access to the steering column and/or pedals.
Whilst the invention has been described above, it extends to any inventive combination of the features disclosed above or in the following description.
The invention may be performed in various ways and an embodiment will now be described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures l(a) and (b) show a car in accordance with the invention with the driving seat in the driving position and the locked position respectively; Figures 2(a) and (b) are side views of the seat slide mechanism when the seat is in the positions shown in Figures l(a) and (b) respectively, and Figure 3 is a section view taken on lines III-III of Figure 2(b).
Referring to Figure l(a) there is shown the driver's seat 10 spaced back from the steering wheel 12 and foot pedals 14. In this position the driver can operate the vehicle as usual and the seat can be moved to the required driving position. In Figure 1(b) the seat 10 is shown in its second or forwardmost position in which access to the driving wheel and pedals is obstructed. The seat 10 is mounted on a slide 18 and can be locked in its forwardmost position.
As seen in Figures 2(a) and (b) and 3, the slide 1 comprises three components; an outer casing 20 secured to the floor or sides of the driving well; a carriage 22 with ball bearings 24 slidably mounted in the casing, and an inner runner 26 carried by the carriage and secured to the seat 10.
As seen in Figure 2(b) the runner 26 includes a locking device 28 operable by a key to throw bolts 30 into associated latch recesses 32 in the casing. The bolts may be self-locking or dead locking.
If required, an alarm may be associated with the seat locking system which is triggered if an attempt is made to force the seat away from its obstructing position.
It will be appreciated that the system described above may be fitted or retro-fitted to a wide range of cars.

Claims (8)

1. A moveable seat that can be locked in the forward most position on slides which then makes the vehicle undriveable by means of the seat blocking the steering wheel and control pedals when the vehicle is not in use. The seat can then be unlocked and moved to the drive position ready for use. The seat can be tilted in the forward position and locked to prevent access to the steering column and/or pedals.
2. The vehicle seat is in the normal drive position as in Figure la in Claim 1.
3. The vehicle seat is then pushed forward from the normal drive position and locked to cover the steering wheel and pedals as in Figure lb in Claim 1.
4. The vehicle seat can be tilted forward and locked as in Claim 1.
5. The vehicle seat can be fitted with an alarm if so required as in Claim 1.
6. The vehicle seat is pushed forward on slides as in Claim 1.
7. The vehicle seat can be unlocked and pushed to the normal drive position as in Claim 1 and Claim 4.
8. A vehicle security arrangement as described herein with reference to Figures la, lb and 2 of the accompanying drawing.
