Abstract

An anti-theft device for motor vehicle seats, particularly but not exclusively the driver's seat, includes means operable by a key or other security device to move the seat, or a pivotable backrest thereof, to a position in which access to the seat by a person is inhibited, and to lock the seat securely in this position.

Description

Anti-Theft Device for Vehicles This invention relates to an anti-theft device for vehicles and particularly but not exclusively, to devices for moving the driver's seat, at least, to a position in which access to the driver's seat is inhibited, and there to lock the seat to prevent the vehicle being driven.
Security devices for locking certain parts of the car, such as the steering wheel or the gear change lever, in certain positions to prevent the car being driven are already known and widely used. The present invention seeks to provide an alternative anti-theft device which is more positive and automatic in its operation.
According to the present invention there is provided an anti-theft device for motor vehicle seats, including means operable by a key or other security device to move the seat, or a part thereof, to a position in which access to the seat is inhibited.
Preferably, the seat is the driver's seat. The said part of the seat may comprise the reclinable seat back of a seat or the seat back of a seat which is pivotable forwardly on a hinge to enable access to the rear seats in a two door car. The means may comprise electrically or hydraulically operable actuators.
A preferred embodiment of the invention, applied to a vehicle seat having a seat back pivotally mounted on a seat frame, has an actuator, which may be electrically or hydraulically operated, which is connected to the seat back through a linkage arrangement to actuate the normal seat reclining mechanism to pivot the seat forwardly to a position in which it is impossible for a person to sit in the seat. Alternatively, the actuator may disable the normal mechanism for tilting the seat back by for example disconnecting a clutch, the actuator including a mechanism which serves to pivot the seat rapidly into its forward most position. The means may also, additionally or alternatively, include actuating means to move the seat forward on the seat runners, again, into a position in which it is impossible for a person to sit on the seat.
The means may be operable by a key or other security device. The key may be the normal door lock key of the vehicle or a separate lock operated either by the ignition key or a separate key.
The term key is intended to cover any security device such as an electronic key, a key pad having a predetermined code, or electronic sensors responsive to predetermined infra-red or radiowaves, for example. The key may be operable from inside or outside of the vehicle and may be interconnected with the ignition or door locks so that the seat is automatically moved to the secure position as the vehicle is made secure in the usual way. It is envisaged that both front seats of a vehicle will have the device. In this way, with the seats hard up against the dashboard and steering column, even if a thief gains access to the interior of the vehicle, by breaking a window, for example, it will be more difficult for valuable dashboard-mounted items such as the radio, CD player or carphone to be removed.

Claims (11)

1. An anti-theft device for motor vehicle seats, including means operable by a key or other security device to move the seat, or a part thereof, to a position in which access to the seat by a person is inhibited.
2. A device according to claim 1, wherein the seat is the driver's seat.
3. A device according to claim 1, wherein said part of the seat comprises an adjustable, reclinable seat back of a seat.
4. A device according to claim 1, wherein said part of the seat comprises a seat back of a seat which is pivotable forwardly on a hinge to enable access to the rear seats in a two door car.
5. A device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the means may comprise electrically or hydraulically operable actuators.
6. A device according to claim 3, wherein the seat back is pivotally mounted on a seat frame, the device having an actuator which is connected to the seat back through a linkage arrangement to actuate the normal seat reclining mechanism to pivot the seat forwardly to a position in which it is impossible for a person to sit in the seat.
7. A device according to claim 3, wherein the actuator is adapted to disable the normal mechanism for tilting the seat back, the actuator including a mechanism which serves to pivot the seat rapidly into its forward most position, after the normal mechanism is disabled.
8. A device according to claim 8 wherein, when the seat is mounted on runners for longitudinal adjustment of the seat position, the means, additionally or alternatively, includes actuating means to move the seat forward on the seat runners, again, into a position in which it is impossible for a person to sit on the seat.
9. A device according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the said means is operable by a key or other security device.
10. A device according to claim 9 wherein the key is the door lock key of the vehicle or a separate lock operated either by the ignition key or a separate key.
11. A device according any one of thd preceding claims wherein said means is operable from outside the vehicle.
