Abstract
A light-weight construction board suitable for non-load-bearing structures, for example as wall board or partition boarding, comprises filler board sheeting (10) sandwiched between two sheets (11) of metal wire mesh, and metal wires or rods (13) extending diagonally through the sheeting, at least some of the wires or rods having their ends secured to the metal wire mesh. The filler board sheeting may be of foamed plastics material and preferably incorporates flame retardant material or substances. <IMAGE>
Description
CONSTRUCTION BOARD
This invention relates to construction board for example for use in making external or internal walls or partition walls.
According to the invention there is provided a construction board comprising filler board sheeting sandwiched between two sheets of metal wire mesh, and metal wires or rods extending diagonally through the sheeting, at least some of the wires or rods having their ends secured to the metal wire mesh.
Preferably said filler board sheeting incorporates flame retardant material.
In one preferred form of board according to the invention, the filler board sheeting is made from foamed plastics material.
According to a preferred feature of the invention, the ends of the metal wires or rods are welded to the wire mesh.
According to another preferred feature of the invention, the metal wires or rods extend through the filler board sheeting at an angle of substantially 450 to the general plane of the sheeting.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference by way of example to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows, partly in section, a construction board embodying the invention, and
Figure 2 shows, partly in section, the board of Figure 1 with concrete applied to opposite faces of the board.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, a sheet 10 of foamed plastics incorporating flame retardant material is sandwiched between two sheets 11 of square mesh made from steel rods or wires 12 welded together. Lengths 13 of steel wire or rod are pushed diagonally through the sheet 10 and have their ends welded to the rods or wires 12. The wires or rods 13 in adjacent rows extend in opposite diagonal directions.
The opposite end rows of diagonally extending wires or rods indicated at 13a are disposed against the edges of the sheet 10.
In use of the construction board illustrated in Figure 1 as, for example, non-load bearing partitioning, a layer 15 of concrete or plastic is applied to each face of the board so that the mesh sheets 11 and the ends of the wires or rods 13 are embedded in the concrete or plaster as shown in Figure 2.
The board shown in Figure 1 is of relatively light weight and is economic of materials, time and labour in its construction. An important advantage of the construction is that the filler board sheet 10 cannot shift relative to the mesh, and even layers of mortar, plaster or concrete can therefore be applied to opposite sides of the board, so that the finished construction is of uniform strength.
Other advantages of the board are
1) it has good fireproofing, heat insulation, sound insulation and shock insulation properties,
2) transport costs of the board to the site are low and the inherent strength of the board ensures that there is a low breakage rate,
3) the light weight of the board reduces the cost of associated formwork on the building site and can lead to reduced cost in the foundations.
Tests for fire resistance, heat insulation and sound insulation were carried out on panels of the board 1200mm x 2400mm x 75mm in size with the following results:
1. After both sides were sealed with cement plaster, the fire resistance rating was 1-2 hours;
2. Used wall board, its load rating was 1489.5 kg/m2.
3. The heat conductivity coefficient was 0 less than 0.134 KCal/m.h. C, approximately the same as the heat conductivity of a brick wall 0.5m thick.
4. The sound insulation rating was between 41 and 53 dB.
In one example of board according to the invention, the filler board sheeting was flame retardant polystyrene foam with dimensions of 1200 x 2400 x 50mm. The mesh was of zinc plated low carbon steel rod, 2mm in diameter, and 1104 lengths of 2mm diameter steel wire rod were passed through the foam material diagonally at an angle of 450 and had their ends welded to the mesh.
