Description

Cantilever Assembly This invention relates to a cantilever assembly for supporting a component, for a example a roof gutter, relative to a structure.
It is known to support roof guttering components by means of brackets. Generally such brackets comprise a face plate and a support member integral with and extending from the face plate, the support member having a concave surface for receiving a guttering component. The face plate is provided with apertures for receiving screws so that, when the face plate is located on a facia board structure adjacent a roof, the bracket can be secured to the facia board by means of the screws and the support member extends outwardly as a cantilever from the facia board.
A disadvantage of known brackets is that vertical positioning of the brackets on a facia board requires skill to ensure that rainwater received in roof guttering is directed to drainpipes.
It is desirable, therefore, to provide a cantilever assembly suitable for supporting a roof guttering component installation of which requires less skill than hitherto so that maintenance can be carried out by a householder without employing skilled labour.
According to the present invention there is provided a cantilever assembly for supporting a component relative to a structure comprising a securing member adapted to be secured to the structure, a support member for supporting the component and adapted to cooperate with the securing member and means for locating the members relative one to another so that the component is supported at a selected location relative to the structure.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a securing member of one embodiment of an assembly in accordance with the present invention, Figure 2 is an elevation in the direction of the arrow "A" of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a cross section on the line III-III of Figure 2, Figure 4 is a side elevation of a support member of the assembly, Figured 5 is a plan view of the support member shown in Figure 4, Figure 6 is diagrammatic representation showing the assembly when located on a facia board, Figure 7 is a view in the direction of the arrow "B" in Figure 6, and Figure 8 is a plan view of part of the assembly shown in Figures 6 and 7.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a cantilever assembly 10 comprising a securing member 11 and a support member 12, both made of plastics material.
The securing member 11 is elongate and has a front surface 13, a rear surface 14 and a pair of opposite facing marginal guides 15, 16 each of which is provided with a longitudinal groove 17, 18. Each of the guides 15, 16 is provided with a centrally located recess which extends transversely inwardly and longitudinally of the securing member 11 as shown at 19, 20, thereby providing a web 21, 22 and a lower portion of each web 21, 22 is provided with an integral outwardly extending spigot 23, 24. The securing member 11 is provided with a series of apertures 25 extending in a longitudinal direction downwardly to a location adjacent the recesses 19, 20 and is also provided with a lower aperture 26.
The support member 12 comprises an elongate base 27 having a front surface 28, a rear surface 29 and side walls 30, 31. The base 27 of the support member 12 is formed so as to provide two spaced longitudinally extending channels 32, 33 each having a longitudinally extending projection 34, 35 extending inwardly from the rear surface 29 towards the front surface 28. Each of the side walls 30, 31 is provided with a series of apertures 36, 37 extending longitudinally of the base 27.
The front surface 28 of the base 27 is provided with an upper outwardly extending lug 38 and a lower portion of the front surface 28 of the base 27 is provided with an outwardly projecting flange 39 having an upwardly curved lower surface 40 and a concave upper surface 41, the outer extremity of the flange 39 terminating in an inwardly extending lug 42.
The dimensions of the securing member 11 and the support member 12 are such that the securing member 11 is receivable in the base 27 of the support member 12 such that the support member 12 is slidable longitudinally of the securing member 11, the guides 15, 16 of the securing member 11 being received in the channels 32, 33 of the base 27 of the support member 12 and movement of the base 27 longitudinally of the securing member 11 being guided by the projections 34, 35 received in the grooves 17, 18 of the guides 15, 16 of the securing member 11.
Mounting of the assembly on a facia board 43 located below and adjacent a roof (not shown) of a building is effected by inserting a screw 44 in a selected one of the apertures 25 and a screw 45 in the aperture 26 and screwing the screws 44, 45 into the facia board 43 at a selected location on the facia board. The support member 12 then is located on the securing member 11 by positioning the base 27 below the securing member 11 and guiding the support member 12 in an upward direction such that the guides 15, 16 of the securing member 11 are received in the channels 32, 33 of the base 27 of the support member 12.
When an upper surface of the base 27 of the support member 12 abuts the spigots 23, 24 of securing member 11, the spigots 23, 24 are pressed inwardly towards one another, as indicated by the arrows in Figure 2, such that the webs 21, 22 flex inwardly to the positions shown in dotted lines in Figure 2.Movement of the support member 12 relative to the securing member 11 in an upward direction is then effected until the spigots 23, 24 register with a successive pair of apertures 36, 37 in the side walls 30, 31 of the base 27 of the support member 12 whereupon inward pressure on the webs 21, 22 is released and the webs 21, 22, due to the inherent resilient characteristics of the plastics material of the securing member 11, return to the position shown in full lines in Figure 2 with a result that the spigots 23, 24 enter the apertures 36, 37 in register therewith and prevent further sliding movement of the support member 12 relative to the securing member 11.
If it is required to effect further upward movement of the support member 12 relative to the securing member 11, the spigots 23, 24 are squeezed inwardly towards one another thereby releasing engagement of the spigots 23, 24 with the corresponding apertures 36, 37 and upward movement of the support member 12 relative to the securing member 11 may be effected until the spigots 23, 24 are in register with further corresponding apertures 36, 37 whereupon the upward movement is arrested due to the spigots 23, 24 springing into engagement with the apertures 36, 37 in register therewith. The process is repeated until the support member 12 is at a desired vertical location relative to the securing member 11, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 6.
When the support member 12 is at a desired location relative to the facia board 43, a guttering component (not shown) may be located on the flange 39 such that the component is supported on the concave upper surface 41 of the flange 39 and longitudinal marginal edge portions of the guttering component are located under the lugs 38, 42 of the support member 12.
It will be appreciated that the support member 12 may be adjusted vertically relative to the securing member 11 repeatedly in an upward direction and in a downward direction and that such relative movement may be effected even after a guttering component has been mounted on the support member 12.
It will also be appreciated that, by providing a series of apertures 25 in the securing member 11, the securing member may be cut to size if the upward dimension of the securing member 11 above the recesses 19, 20 is in excess of a required dimension.
