Handles or holders with recessed-back retaining devices for brushes.-The perforated stock S of the brush is covered by a perforated plate V, fixed by screws &c., and this plate or the stock is provided with projections at the end engaging a recess in the back to hold the stock and plate securely against the back A. As shown, the recess B in the back A is undercut at the end C and is lined with a plate D shaped to fit the undercut end and fixed bv a screw G. The other end H of the plate D is turned at right angles and, together with a plate or head J on a tube I in the handle or stock, is fixed by screws K. The backing-plate V is formed at one end with projections X to engage the undercut end C of the recess B, or these projections may be on the stock plate S and project through holes in the plate V. At the other end of the plate V or stock is a projection Y engaged by the end of a rod P sliding in the tube I and' operated bv a knob Q fixed on the screwed end P<1> of the rod so as to move the rod to engage or release the projections Y. The screwed end P<1> of the rod engages a screw threaded bush or tube L screwed on to the tube I and fixed to the end of the handle or stock by screws N. A rim Z may be formed on the back A to cover the edges of the stock, or alternatively a rim may be formed on the edge of the stock. The plate V is perforated with holes not coincident with the bristle holes in the stock S so that, when the brush is washed, water or sediment does not remain between the stock and the plate.
