Abstract

A fencing system comprising a plurality of fixed members such as posts (1) each having an end (2) adapted, by means of a spike, or by tapering, or the like, to be driven into the ground (2). Each post is of V-shape channel cross section with a plurality of slots (5) at the apex (6) of the V. Horizontal wires (7) each have a portion (8) which extends linearly through each slot (5) such that said portion (8) lies within the slot. A retaining rod (9) is positioned within the apex of the post (1) between the said apex and the portion (8) of a wire (7). The rod (9) has a length sufficient to extend behind all the slots and at one end a hook means (10) may be provided to prevent disengagement. The post may be cylindrical, or a V-shaped channel may be attached to a wooden post; the slot may be X- shaped for wire mesh fence. The construction permits ease of relocation. <IMAGE>

Description

TITLE Improvements in Fencing This invention relates to improvements in fencing, and seeks to provide a construction of fence which may be erected in a simple manner using easily fabricated component parts and which may also be dismantled readily and re-used.
According to this invention a fencing system comprises a hollow or channel shaped fixed member with a slot arranged so that a portion of a wire forming a fence may lie within the slot, a retaining means engaging between said portion and the channel shaped member to retain said wire in the slot.
According to a further aspect of this invention a fencing system comprises a curved or angular fixed member with a slot extending in the direction of curvature or angularity and arranged so that a linear portion of a wire forming a fence may lie within the slot, a retaining means engaging between said linear portion and the fixed member to retain said wire in the slot.
The fixed member may have a channel shape or tubular shape cross-section and preferably includes means to secure same to a post such as one or more staples or integral spikes or tangs to be driven into said post. The said fixed member may itself constitute the post.
According to this invention a fencing system is also provided which comprises a post to be driven or otherwise secured vertically in the ground, a slot through a wall of the post to receive a generally horizontally extending wire, with a portion of said wire lying within the slot, and a retaining rod engaging between said portion of wire and the post.
Preferably the post comprises a hollow or channel shaped member with the slot arranged such that a wire may extend linearly through the slot. The post may have a circular cross-section or, preferably, a V-shaped cross section in which case the slot is provided symmetrically at the apex of the V.
Advantageously a plurality of slots are provided at spaced locations along the fixed member or the post with a rod or retaining means extending over all the slots.
The rod preferably has a means to engage a wire, or the post, to retain same in position.
The slot may have a cruciform plan to receive the intersection of a chain link or "chicken-wire" type fencing.
One embodiment according to this invention is described with reference to the drawings, as an example.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a schematic view of a fence, according to this invention, with one post in front view and another post in rear view, Figure 2 shows a cross section on II-II of Figure 1, Figure 3 shows the retaining rod, Figure 4 shows a modified construction in front view, Figure 5 shows a further modification in front view, Figures 5a and Sb show a fixing staple in more detail, in perspective and end views, Figure 6 shows a version for chain link fencing, Figure 7 shows the version of Figure 6 in front view, and Figures 8 to 10 show a modified fixing staple.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, a fencing system comprises a plurality of fixed members such as posts 1 each having an end 2 adapted, by means of a spike, or by tapering, or the like, to be driven into the ground 3. Alternatively the post may be connected with a base of large mass to form a free standing structure. The top of the post 4 may be reinforced or otherwise adapted to receive blows required to drive same into the ground.
Each post is of V-shape channel cross section with a plurality of slots 5 at the apex 6 of the V. Horizontal wires 7 each have a portion 8 which extends linearly through each slot 5 such that said portion 8 lies within the slot. A retaining rod 9 is positioned within the apex of the post 1 between the said apex and the portion 8 of a wire 7. The rod 9 has a length sufficient to extend behind all the slots and at one end a hook means 10 may be provided to prevent disengagement.
In use, the fence is erected by first driving the posts 1 into the ground at required locations following which the wire 7 is stretched out to lie in the slots and retained by the rods 9. Suitable tensioning means may be provided on one or both end posts or at intermediate positions.
A particular advantage is that the fence may be dismantled and the components re-used at another location, rendering the system useful in animal husbandry where short term pasture enclosure is required.
Insulation pieces may be provided where one or more wires are to be electrified.
The construction in particular does not distort or kink the wires 7 so that they may be rewound or re-used without loss of strength through fatigue.
Although a V-shaped post is disclosed it will be apparent that circular or polygonal cross-section can be used equally well, with the slots in an angular edge to allow the wire to linearly pass therethrough. Indeed with polygonal posts more than one slot may be provided peripherally spaced to permit a choice of wire location, for example at turning points. Polygonal posts generally will require a modified retainer 9 to enable same to be removed and inserted more readily within the hollow post.
In terms of cost and materials the V-shaped post is preferred as well as more readily facilitating storage and erection.
Figure 4 shows a modified arrangement but wherein the inventive step is, in essence, the same as hereinbefore described but wherein the fixed member 1 is secured by staples 11 to a wooden post 12 embedded in the ground. The function of the fixed member 1 is identical to that described and like parts are identified by like references.
In the modification of Figure 5 each wire 7 is retained by an individual staple 13 with spikes 14 which are driven into wooden post 12 as shown in Figures Sa and Sb. The staples have slots 5 through which the wires 7 pass to be retained by rod 9. The rod 9 may be secured by a nail 15.
In Figures 6 and 7 a version is shown for retaining chain link fencing 16 using hollow support 17 with a cruciform slot 18 to receive the wires at an intersection point 19. Again a rod 9 is used to retain the fence.
Figures 8 to 10 show a modified staple fixed member similar to the embodiment shown in Figures 5, 5a and 5b.
The main difference here is the way in which slot 5 is formed by deforming the staple 13 to form a rear part 13a defining effectively a tubular member. This construction could equally well be used with the other embodiments disclosed and provides a better location for the securing rod 9.

Claims (14)

1. A fencing system comprising a hollow or channel shaped fixed member with a slot arranged so that a portion of a wire forming a fence may lie within the slot, a retaining means engaging between said portion and the channel shaped member to retain said wire in the slot.
2. A fencing system comprising a curved or angular fixed member with a slot extending in the direction of curvature or angularity and arranged so that a linear portion of a wire forming a fence may lie within the slot, a retaining means engaging between said linear portion and the fixed member to retain said wire in the slot.
3. A fencing system according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixed member has a channel or tubular shape cross-section.
4. A fencing system according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixed member includes means to secure same to a post such as one or more staples or integral spikes or tangs to be driven into said post.
5. A fencing system according to any preceding claim, wherein said fixed member itself constitutes the post.
6. A fencing system comprising a post to be driven or otherwise secured vertically in the ground, a slot through a wall of the post to receive a generally horizontally extending wire, with a portion of said wire lying within the slot, and a retaining rod engaging between said portion of wire and the post.
7. A fencing system according to Claim 6, wherein the post comprises a hollow or channel shaped member with the slot arranged such that a wire may extend linearly through the slot.
8. A fencing system according to Claim 7, wherein the post has a circular cross-section or, preferably, a Vshaped cross section in which case the slot is provided symmetrically at the apex of the V.
9. A fencing system according to any preceding claim, wherein a plurality of slots are provided at spaced locations along the fixed member or the post with a rod or retaining means extending over all the slots.
10. A fencing system according to Claim 9, wherein the rod or retaining means has a means to engage a wire, or the post, to retain same in position.
11. A fencing system according to any preceding claim, wherein the slot has a cruciform plan to receive the intersection of a chain link or "chicken-wire" type fencing.
12. A fencing system according to any preceding claim, wherein the slot is formed by deforming a portion of the fixed member or the post to lie to the rear of the slot thus formed.
13. A fencing system according to any preceding claim, wherein the fixed member or the post has a channel section with spike or tang portions projecting from the limbs and serving as attachment means to a support member such as a post.
14. A fencing system constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner herein set forth and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
