Abstract

A fencing or barrier post comprising a tubular member having at least one slot 4 through which is "posted" a link of a chain or a loop of a rope, which is retained in position by a straight pin or bolt or an R-pin, located within the post. The post may include a plurality of slots or cut-outs located at predetermined axial distances apart. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Fencing/barrier post This invention relates to fencing posts or barrier posts.
According to the present invention there is provided a fencing post or barrier post comprising a tubular member having at least one cut-out or slot therein for receiving a portion of a chain, rope or other elongate member, said chain, rope or other elongate member being retained in position relative to said post by means located within the post and lying between said portion and an inner wall of said post.
Said means will preferably be constituted by an R-pin or a straight pin or bolt which when in the operative position is adjacent the inner wall of the post.
Said post will preferably be provided with a cap or closure member which is securable in the open top of the post so as to protect the inner surfaces of the post and to protect the pin, and also to prevent removal of the pin.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described, by way of exampie, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of a fencing post or barrier post according to the invention, showing the post in relation to the ground; and Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation of the post of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing and firstly to Figure 1, there is shown a fencing post or barrier post 2 which is a hollow tubular member and which is composed of galvanised steel, although it will be appreciated that other materials may be used if preferred. The post 2 is provided near its upper extremity with an elongate, circumferentially extending slot 4, which will preferably be milled or cut into the walls of the post, and near its lower extremity with opposed holes 6 through which may be passed a steel reinforcing bar 8 where the post is to be set in concrete (not shown). It will be seen that approximately one-third of the length of the post is intended to be located below ground level G, aithough such length may be varied to suit differing site conditions and to suit differing purposes which the post is designed to serve.
The post 2, referring now to Figure 2, having its slot or cut-out 4 and opposed holes 6, is shown with a chain 10 located relative thereto. It will be seen that one link 1 0A of the chain 10 is "posted" through the slot or cut-out 4 and is maintained in the "posted" position by passing a pin or bolt 12 downwardly through the upper open end of the post, the pin or bolt 12 passing through the link 1 0A and being located against the inner wall of the post. Instead of a straight pin or bolt, an R-clip may be used if preferred.
When the pin or bolt 12 has been located within the post 2, a top cap 14 which is preferably tapered and formed of a cast alloy or other material is forced into the open upper end of the post 2 so as to prevent removal of the pin, and to protect the pin or bolt and the interior of the post from adverse weather conditions. The top cap 14 also serves to prevent the ingress of foreign bodies.
Whilst the invention has been described in relation to a single post, it will be appreciated that the invention may equally be applied to two-tier or multi-tier posts in which case the post will be provided with a plurality of elongate slots or cutouts located at predetermined distances apart along the length of the post. The means of securing the chain in position will be as described above, but a single pin of adequate length may pass through all links lying within the post instead of using separate pins for each such link.
It will be appreciated that the post 2 may be other than cylindrical, in that it may be square or rectangular or any other desired regular shape.
It will also be appreciated that instead of a chain being used to form the fence or barrier, a rope or other flexible member may be used, a loop being formed and "posted" through the slot or cut-out and being engaged by a pin or bolt to retain the rope or other flexible member relative to the post.
1. A fencing post or barrier post comprising a tubular member having at least one cut-out or slot therein for receiving a portion of a chain, rope or other elongate member, said chain, rope or other elongate member being retained in position relative to said post by means located within the post and lying between said portion and an inner wall of said post.
2. A fencing post or barrier post according to Claim 1, wherein said means comprises an R-pin or a straight pin or bolt.
3. A fencing post or barrier post according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the post is composed of galvanized steel.
4. A fencing post or barrier post according to claim 3, wherein the slot or cut-out is milled or cut into the wall of the post.
5. A fencing post or barrier post according to any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the post has opposed holes near its lower extremity for receiving a reinforcing bar.
6. A fencing post or barrier post according to any of the preceding Claims, wherein the post has a plurality of axially spaced slots or cut-outs.
7. A fencing post or barrier post substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
