Fluid-actuated gears. - A hydraulic gear for lift valves, slides, and cocks and shown applied to lift valves comprises a piston 3 secured to the valve 1 which is reciprocated by a piston 9 driven from the engine, which piston may be angularly adjusted to vary the time of opening and closing of the valve. The piston 3 is connected to an oil-buffer 20 which breaks the closing impact of the valve, and is pressed down by a spring 19. The cylinder 4 housing the piston 3 is surrounded by an oil-supply chamber 11 which communicates with a chamber 5 beneath the piston 3 by a valve-controlled passage which replenishes the chamber 5 with oil during the descent of the operating-piston 9. When the piston 9, which is made hollow and is provided with ports 17, closes port 18, liquid supplied by passage 10 is cut-off and is forced through passage 6 to raise valve 1. On port 17 registering with port 18, the valve 1 is closed. The time of admission is varied by shaping the upper surface of the piston 9. A partition may be arranged between the piston 3 and buffer 20, and the valve is then closed by oil pressure acting upon the upper surface of piston 3 which is controlled by a second piston of similar construction to the piston 9. The two controlling-pistons may be arranged as a single stepped piston. In Dieselengines, the fuel pump may be combined with the fuel-controlling-needle operating-gear thereby dispensing with separate driving-means.
