Abstract

A lockable drive device has a pull rod 2 which moves across the back of the face plate 1 between an unlocked and locked position. A rotatable entraining member 5 engages with a toothed engagement means 4 attached to the rod 2 to cause the rod 2 to move. In the operated position (fig. 2) the entraining member is engaged with the engagement means such that any force applied longitudinally of pull rod 2 is transferred radially along the entraining member through its pivot axis. Thus such forces eg to force a bolt attached to the pull rod, will not cause rotation of the entrainment member and consequent release of the bolt. In the specific embodiment the device is associated with the bolt of a window or door fastener. <IMAGE>

Description

# A LOCKABLE DRIVING DEVICE This invention relates to a lockable driving
device and is particularly, but not exclusively, concerned with such a device for use with windows, doors or the like which have a central closing member which is activated by way of an olive which has a pin adapted to move a gear or an entraining member rotatable in a drive casing.
Rotation of the gear or the entraining member moves a pull rod of the drive and if this pull rod is connected to other arrangements it also pulls these other arrangements.
Windows,, door or the like which have narrow section members require a small drive casing and also require a gear or entraining member to be used to ensure adequate movement of a pull rod.
Amongst other things, closing pins can be placed on the pull rod which are arranged to engage with closing plates when the pull rod is moved.
one way of preventing an object, which has a closure arrangement as described, being opened without authorisation is for closure pins to be forced to disengage from the closing plates. The pull rods, therefore, move and the gear or entraining member in the drive casing is caused to rotate which in turn causes the olive to rotate so that the element will open.
TO prevent this from happening, conventional drive devices have been provided with a lockable olive which by its connection to the gear or entraining member prevents rotation of the gear or entraining member and thus locks the pull rod and closure pins. However, olives of this kind require two-handed operation otherwise they are too large to be used with sashes which have narrow section members.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of lockable drive device which substantially overcomes the above disadvantages and which ensure that a sash opening retained in a frame by closure pins or the like is not able to be opened in an unauthorised manner from the outside.
1 i According to the present invention a lockabledrive device comprises a face plate, having a pull rod located behind the face plate, a drive casing having a rotatable entraining member therein, one end of the pull rod extending into the drive casing and having engagement means engaged by the rotatable entraining member, the arrangement being such that when the rotatable entraining member is moved to an end position to operate the pull rod it forms a radial angle with the engagement means.
Preferably the engagement means is of toothed form; any forced movement of the pull rod will thereby transmit to the gear or entraining member a radial force and not a peripheral force.
The gear orentraining member cannot, therefore, be rotated with the result that the pull rod remains in a firmly shut position and cannot be moved except by the gear or the entraining member being rotated by way of the olive.
1 I k An example of the present invention will now be described by reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings which show in Figure 1 a section through the drive casing with a gear or entraining member in an intermediate position and, in Figure 2, a similar section with the gear or entraining member in a closed position.
Referring now to the drawings, the lockable drive device comprises a face plate 11 having a longitudinally extending pull rod 2 lying behind it so as to move it longitudinally with respect to the face plate. A drive casing 3 is secured to the face plate and this includes means for driving the pull rod 2.
The pull rod 2 extends into the casing 3 and has engagement means 4 therein. These means are in the form of a toothed rack. An entraining member 5 is in engagement with the means 4 and is mounted for circular movement about an axis.
The device is originally shown in Figure 1 and as the entraining means 5 is rotated,, means 5 engage with the engagement means 4 and cause it and the pull rod 2 to 1 1 1 1 - 9;- move upwards over the back of the face plate 1 to the position shown in Figure 2. It will be seen that in the position shown in Figure 2 where the pull rod is in its locked position the entraining member 5 is at an angle to the surface of the engagement means 4 and thereby prevents forcible movement of the pull rod 2 in a downward direction which would unlock the device.
