Abstract
223,652. Pell, W. Guy-. July 24, 1923. Retorts for the distillation of shale or coal comprise a number of ducts through which the material passes and the distance between the walls of which is small in relation to the cross-sectional area of the ducts which are contained in a common heating zone and are free to expand or contract either individually or collectively. A heating chamber a encloses ducts or tubes f which may be flanged to rest on an upper partition b and may either pass freely through a lower fixed partition g or be secured to a similar partition having a skirt h telescoping in a casing i surmounting a receiver m for the residue. The tubes f may be provided externally with scrapers and internally with spiral agitating means p operated by a crank t, or the material may be forced through the tubes. The inlet ends of the tubes may have a restricted opening to obviate choking. The Provisional Specification describes also tubes having flat or corrugated walls, and provided with perforated tubes extending into the cover to facilitate the flow of gases from the material.
