Dec. S ,Y l925 J. T. POPE OIL sHALE RETOHT 5 Sheets-Sheet l original Filed oct- 24, 1922 Dec.v 8, 1925. .1561271 JQT. POPE on.' sH'ALE RETORT Original Filed Oct. 24, 1922 5 Sheets-Sheet 2 Dec. 8 1925 ,J. T. POPE OIL SHALE RETQRT 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 Original Filed Oct. 24, 1922 repaire'required en the pi e .rack and table` 'A gas pipe S is connecte( with the lnterlbr on the table T. The table is set at a slight incline toward the discharge end and as reeiprocated the shale will pass over the table as a continuous sheet of moving shale'parti cies. The heat from the furnace will be radiated directly onthe bottom of the table and also all around the shale. Additional heat irom superheated steam will be directed by the steam pipe rack M on and around the passing shale. The purposeof the steam heat thus supplied directly on the shale is to prevent anycraeking of the oil while inA the retort-casing and to keep a regular heat supply as desired; that so far found most advantageous is about 650 degrees F. The steam yalso has a tendency to drive the vola tilized oil out of the casing through the pipe line S..- I thus rovide an economically condit etructed and eheient retort iu which a continuous flow of crushed shale may be treated,
to volatilize and drive off the oil content of:y
'the shale7 withoutperacking and destructive distillation, leavmg that to `be carried out through condensation as desired. The shale which is carried in the hutes H and above the roller gates J act-as seals to prevent eeeapement of the volatilized oil from the, rye'- tort.
Having thus described by invention and its operation I desire to vsecure by Letters atent and alain/ifml l. In an oil shale retort the combination ot' a sheet metal casing having a furnace thereunder; an angle iron frame secured to the sides of said casing; a, grid composed of 45 inverted T-irons andiire'brick slabs placed between the furnace and said sheet metal casing; an inclined metal table suspended from said frame; means to reciprocate said table longitudinally `a perforated steam 50 rack spaced above said table; means to conduct superheated steam to said steam rack; chutes to conduct crushed shale to and from said table; rotatable roller gates to control the passage otcrushcd shale through said retort; and a pipe line to conduct gas from said casing.
2. `An oil shale retort consisting; of an eitclosed metal easing; a furnace thereunder; a reciprocating table suspended in said casing; a plurality of perforated pipes spaced above said table to direct steam onto said table for volatil/izing the oil content of' oil shale; sealedehutes to control the` passageol shale over said table; and a pi ,e conn nected with the upper portion ot' sai casing; to convey volatilized oil from its interior.
'3. An oil shale retort, consisting of an enclosed metal casing; 'a reciprocation table suspended in said casing; a plurality ot" per- T0 l'orated' pipes spaced above said table to direct super xeated steam onto said table for .volatilizing the oil content of shale; ingress and egress chutes connected ,with said table; roller gates to control the How of shale over I5 said table nand a pipe connected with the upper interlorfo'said easingr to convey oil vapor from its interior. e
