Abstract

223,621. Nance, C. W. April 27, 1923. Tanning and treating in vacuo; tanning under pressure.-Hides are tanned by treating them first with a tanning liquor which is made to boil continuously at a low pressure, and subsequently with a hot tanning liquor which is made to exert pressure on the hides, for example by thermal expansion. The hides are suspended in the liquor in an autoclave in which a high vacuum is produced, and the desired temperature of 90‹ F. is preferably maintained by allowing a little hot air, from which all oxygen has been removed, to enter the autoclave to agitate the hides and prevent the tannin from settling. These conditions operate for 6-8 hours. The autoclave is then completely filled with fresh air-free liquor and sealed. The liquor is heated so that, by thermal expansion, it exerts pressure on the hides, a temperature of 100‹ F. and a pressure of 50 lb. to the square inch being suitable. This procedure occupies 6-8 hours and is repeated, if necessary, until the hides are thoroughly tanned. The leather is then washed by covering it with water, producing a high vacuum in the autoclave, and allowing a little air to bubble through. Finally the leather is dried by subjecting it to a, high vacuum and allowing a little hot air, from which oxygen has been removed, to enter the autoclave. The process may be modified by omitting the preliminary treatment in vacuo, and by obtaining the desired pressure by pumping in hot air-free liquor.
